Nope!
iTunes does use a database of sorts for most of its data. If it had to access all of the files directly each time it loaded, it would be
excruciatingly slow for thousands of files. When you add a file to iTunes, it imports the metadata into its own database. That's what those "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" files represent.
