try examining your home folder on your internal hard drive WITHOUT the La Cie plugged in. You shouldn't see the Home icon on the desktop if the La Cie is not plugged in.

YES.
There HAS to be something there, besides just an alias - otherwise, you would have no Mail, iTunes, iCal, Address Book data, except when the La Cie is hooked up.
Besides doing a Get Info, have you tried opening it?
