I suspect they showed the preview when they did because a huge number of their .mac subscriptions renew in September/October, which is when they first introduced the paying version of .Mac (nee iTools) several years ago. In order to whet subscribers' appatite to renew, they showed the preview roughly around the same time people's renewal notices went around.
