Honestly, no. Something in my brain did not make the connection to that, but I will from now on. It is an additional step, and it's more swiping back and forth between glances... but better than nothing.
The Watch is at its best when it knows what you want and works as you expect it to. I'm not sure why Apple would think that by default people would want all notification rules to remain the same during a Workout and would also want them to take over the screen.
