Dorian, I haven't read that book, but are you implying that Nick isn't entitled to enjoy the profits of his investment? That his enjoyment would be somehow immoral?

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but that's the impression I get.

I think Nick has worked hard over many years to accomplish his goals. He has probably given thousands of dollars to charity over time. Plus, his normal job is a relatively altruistic one, and is not especially well-paid in the US. I imagine he has done more to help others on this earth in just a few years than most people would in ten lifetimes.

That he has managed to have the foresight to save money and then invest on the side is a tribute to his energy and his willingness to take risks.

We are given the intellect and will to accomplish many things in life. Bettering one's standard of living and enjoying life's more material pleasures should surely be considered part of the whole mosaic of what it is to be human.
