Maybe instead of making the forum "opt-in" you could make it "opt-out".
That way, it's there from the start for new users and guests, but people who want to hide the forum could.
I can also see your point Brad, there are many threads here that people don't care about and would love to hide, it just seems as if the MC stuff has gotten a lot more traffic recently.
