Edit: Nevermind, I ended up reading the rest of the thread. Ultimately, you probably made the right decision. The iPhone is extremely overpriced and will be a 99$ a year after its released anyway. I for one don't see any point in dropping 600 more on a phone just to have it an extra year.
BTW, you can go month-to-month on cellphone service. You don't need to sign a contract, you just won't get a discount on the phones. You can get really cheap phones on eBay, though.
