but the problem I am having with this is the subject of the message... I have been a paid .mac member for the life of the service so getting spam from apple that they know isn't relevant to me is somewhat annoying...

I don't quite know the details of it. I've goteen a couple of those recently too. As for the .Mac e-mail, I don't know. I got it too. Some screw up or else there might be something in it about referring a friend? I got it too today. You can opt out of e-mail lists from Apple if you want.
