The correct pronunciation is "ten" and has been since it was introduced. The 'X' character is the roman numeral for ten.
Whenever I hear people say "ex" I assume they are dimwits.
Do people spell out roman numerals in other instances? What about movie titles, for example? If I heard someone say something about "Star Wars episode vee eye" I'd feel obligated to smack 'em. Hard.
