Same thing happened with Honda. Quality went to crap around 2014 when they started moving some production to Mexico. Then the plant flooded and production was moved back to Japan, suddenly the vehicles were good again. My 2011 Honda Fit was built in Japan (2nd generation). The 3rd generation Fit was from Mexico and was apparently a nightmare.
Part of the reason I got a Subaru Crosstrek is that all production is still in Japan.
