It'll default to its native resolution. If you want to keep both the laptop and external display both on at the same time you'll want to go into System Settings>Displays where you arrange which one is on the left/right, how high/low (so your cursor floats between the two nicely), etc. It'll pop up like this when you have the external attached:
Just grab and move 'em where you want.
If you close the laptop only the external shows up.
[Edit]: if you don't have an extra HDMI cable laying around you could also use a Mini DP to HDMI like this.
