I'd suggest diving onto I-70 at Denver, and heading into Southern Utah, spending the night at Bryce Canyon, and getting up to watch the sunrise over the terrain.

Can. Not. Beat. It.

Seriously.

Then do a final long push through Utah on I-15 north, and reconnect with the route Dorian posted.

But yeah, do the Bryce sunrise if you can wing it *at all*. My wife and I did a three week cross-country-and-return trip in 2003, (Raleigh, NC -> Seattle, WA and back,) and that one morning was the highlight of the entire trip.
