the notch is for lever-set watches. some old pocket watches have a lever in that notch that you pull out, then you can use the crown to set the dial. Push it back in, and then the time works. If there's no lever, then either it's broken off (happens a lot) or, it is a crown set watch, and the case was manufactured for both types of watch (also very common). it was definitely repaired or tuned up in 1933, though :-)
