I have this idea for an application.

It would be responsible for the overall user-management of files, disks, network volumes and the launching of other applications, using a graphical user interface.

It would maintain a view of the file system that is rendered using the desktop metaphor - that is, the files and folders are represented as appropriate icons, volumes are displayed on the desktop, and there is a trash can to which files can be dragged to mark them for deletion.

Windows could be colorized, and a list view could expand to include "disclosure triangles" which would allow the user to drill down further into the file system without opening more windows.

It would have an "alias" functionality which would allow files to be represented in multiple locations by simple pointer files and also include a "Put Away" command would also be used as an alternate means to unmount floppy disks and CD-ROMs.

It would also have several other features, including Pop Up windows, which could appear as tabs on the bottom of the Mac's screen until clicked on, at which point they would display their contents. Spring-loaded folders could allow a user to drag and drop files deep into the system's folder hierarchy with a simple drill-down mechanism.

Here's a quick mockup...

But what about a name? Searcher? FileShow? DocuFinder?

How about just Finder?

nahhh....
