T-talkin bout' my g-generation... far out man it's like a time-warp back to high school! Strangely I never heard anyone playing the Pixies in HS.

Apparently I didn't party enough. Mid-life-crisis time! I'm going out today and buying a mint 1989 RX7, a Pixies CD, and driving down to the 80s themed escort service where I can pick up a woman that looks like this:

I've recently been working on a project that requires me to think so I've been listening to classical music which is nice because it leaves the wordsy part of my brain alone... Strauss and Mozart are always soothing, but I also turn to the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet's album Air & Ground, the first song "Lotus Eaters" is always nice and bright. Don't ask me why, but it gives me the very specific feeling of shopping in a bright, high end store with wood plank floors and rustic, mountain lodge decor.

In other musical news a tune popped up in my iTunes library the other afternoon and it was nice, very smooth Bowie that I didn't recognize. When I finally looked I realized that it wasn't Bowie at all, it was Thomas Dolby. The song is Airwaves, from the album The Golden Age of Radio, which has some stinkers and some winners. This song really screams Bowie to me for some reason... and maybe a mix of Joe Jackson?

PJ I find to be a very honest band who have kept their heads. Yes the signal to noise ratio has unfortunately declined in recent years, but of all the bands I grew up with it would PJ I would love to see doing an acoustic set.

Classical music is one genre that I wish I knew more about. From a very simple laymans perspective there seems to be about 10 composers who wrote about 100 songs which have been covered by about 1000000 people. I know I am completely wrong about this, but just putting something out there if anyone wants to give me a bit of guidance. Tend to be more about piano and violin

No, I think you’re right about that! Since so many composers are dead, and many of them died before we had recording technology, we can only enjoy their music if we listen to a recording made in roughly the last half-century. And many people have taken a shot at recording music in the last half-century.

The trick is finding a recording you like. And the secret to doing that, if you’re just starting, is to buy either the Gramophone Classical Music Guide or the Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music (unfortunately the last excellent edition of the latter was the 2010 edition: after that they massively cut its comprehensiveness). Or you could buy both of those books, since they’re quite different.

If you do want to get a feel for classical music the brief notes about different recordings in those books will give you a crash course in thinking about classical music. And by experimenting with a few of the recordings and comparing notes, you’ll quickly find your own taste.

Or you could just buy the Academy of Ancient Music’s recording (with Christopher Hogwood et al.) of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. It’s a period-instrument recording of one of the most accessible pieces of classic music around, and – as far as I’m concerned – it’s the best recording of them all. A great introduction to classical (or more precisely, baroque!) music.

By the way, I’m stuck at home with man flu, it’s inching towards Friday night, and I have a 10-euro iTunes Gift Card. What should I buy? (Not classical: I’m not taking classical recommendations from you riffraff. )

Thanks to Honda I just sent 70% of $.99 to Off the Record for the Instrumental version of Disparate Youth. Catchy track. Awesome for playing over the sounds of a FPS. It puts you in a sort of... zen mode... maaan.

On Wednesday night I caught Cody ChesnuTT at La Cigale. The guy put on a brilliant show. He really understands the power of contrast: between fast and slow, silence and wild jamming, loose timing and split-second precision, calmness and explosive gestures on stage. Even the visual contrast between his thin body and his military helmet is striking.

I love Cody ChesnuTT’s sound, so I enjoyed the music too, though the sound setup was slightly too loud and something was off with the balance between the instruments (I’m not a musician so I can’t really explain what was wrong). But mostly I enjoyed the show.

Amazing audience connection, too. He got right into the crowd at one point, until the alarmed sound guy fished him out by his microphone cable. Once, for a slow song, he asked people to move their coats so he could position a chair right at the edge of the stage. Another time he had us all whispering, “Where is all the money going? Where do all the money come from?” (just before blowing the place up, naturally). Getting a cynical Parisian crowd to participate in this kind of thing is a risk, but he pulled it off.

If Cody ChesnuTT evers puts on a show in your part of the world, and you’re at all susceptible to soul, make a point of getting tickets. He practically defines stage presence.

More streaming audio and video of live music - today, it's the Mountain Jam. Gary Clark Jr. (killer blues) is playing now. Gov't Mule is the closing act of the day.

If you dig that, you will really enjoy Royal Southern Brotherhood. They've got 1 July date in France, and at least 3 more in September. Allman Brothers meet the Neville Brothers meet the Texas blues.

3 September in Paris.

These guys are very hot right now. Their closing performance and extended encore at the Blues Music Awards ceremonies in Memphis last month was the talk of the town. I'm told it will be a public television special later this year.

They have lots of overseas (and US) dates this summer - anyone on the Continent (or in the States) should check the schedule, and catch the band if you can.

Oh, and their debut CD is fantastic. 3 different lead vocalists and a great variety of styles.

Hey piano music fans / musicians... anyone know some good artists who play this style of piano (the track "Receives"... sort of the slow "winter vibe" going on)? Seems like good working music / background music when you got the phones on and are trying to be all inspired like Apple.

Well, I know that no one is tired of hearing about my new favorite (favorite new) band, Royal Southern Brotherhood....

so here's their latest bit of news.

As a sure sign of their ROYAL pedigree, they are playing a triple-bill with Robert Plant and Jeff Beck at The ROYAL Albert Hall on 31 Oct.

I have been a big Elvis Costello fan over the years, but find that his music has not aged all that well with me recently. I hope that is just a temporary phenomenon. Maybe I should give that recording of the live set a try.

I am still especially loving the music of another musician from the era, Billy Bragg, whom I have finally had the opportunity see live (twice!) over the past couple of years (and to briefly talk with after one of his concerts). Great shows: l enjoyed his political commentary between the songs almost as much as the songs themselves.

Some very long Van Morrison live set, badly recorded and shared in the bad old days of mp3. It's got that transcendentalist vibe going. I like it.
