I managed to catch this snippet during the keynote while most were looking at the chip version. In the keynote it is at the 1:35 minute mark.

Yep first thing my eye caught when he brought up that screen. I was going to say I wish with the shift to OS 11 it would have led to a naming convention change like 10.10 did, but I forgot 10.9 wasn’t a cat and was the change over point. Oh well.

But it does make sense to have the first ARM capable OS mark the changeover and officially end the OS X era.

Yeah too bad the California naming scheme didn't go with OSX. Never heard of half these places, let alone say them properly.

True, it is a whole other product line but the transition to Apple Silicone is likely what drove the change in version number. We should email Tim to be sure though.

I am not a fan of the name either, but then again I typically refer to the versions by their number anyway.

Dunno, they didn't bump the major version for the Intel switch.

In many ways OS X wasn't that old when the move to Intel came, and was still working out it's rough edges in 2006. By older Mac OS standards it had been around long enough. The gap between OS7-OS8 was a 6 years, so they could have done it, but Mac OS 10 had apparently been running on Intel test machines since it was first developed, so I guess Steve didn't want to. I recall Steve saying Mac OS 10 had been designed to last 10-15 years, but a lot of under the hood stuff has changed since then. OS9 came along in 1999 with the G4 systems, and late G4 and early G5 systems in 2001 came with OSX. Hard to believe it has been around that long. Nearly 20 years was a long run for OS 10, it was time for a shift in numbers.

RIP Mac OS 10, March 2001-Fall 2020.

Been to Yosemite, and I know what the Sierras are. The other stuff, no clue, not a beach comber.

In any case, they have nothing to do with computers and it should stay that way.

Big Sur brings back the chime!

https://twitter.com/julipuli/status/1275469652374650881

EDIT:Just learned as well that there is a terminal command that turns it on in Catalina. I thought I was going crazy when I turned on my 2019 iMac for the first time and didn't hear the bong. Nice to have it back on.

Apple Silicon seems to be the new "product family" name, not the name of the chips Apple will use. Kind of like "Intel Core i5" it will be "Apple Silicon Ax".

Yeah, I'm so glad all this got people talking. There has been a lot of activity the last couple days. And Kick is always welcome here. Well, until I ban him for looking funny, or something.

On or not, Apple showed it, and if there had been an audience, it would have gone bonkers!

Not even the minor version, even. It was simply 10.14.5. Another point release. They basically wanted to emphasize how smooth that transition was going to be.

Personally I would have switched it to 11 when the "OS X" was dropped. 10 had a good run as the major version, but it makes sense to get away from that now.

It also has to do with the hardware. I think the chime stopped with the Retina models.

Nah, later than that. It may have been the 12-inch MacBook that introduced no chime by default. Or maybe T1 models.

Yeah, something like that. I remember the first one we had to work on in service that had a bad display.

"Is this thing even on?"

"Who the hell knows!"

Hmm, now I wonder if the 2015 Retina MBP my mom uses chimes. It's on Catalina but I basically never use it except to initiate a software update lol.

I just bought a 13" MacBook Pro (2020). The lack of chime is annoying, but what's more annoying is that when I plug in the power, it chirps *EVEN WHEN THE SOUND IS MUTED*.

Phukin' sloppy lack of attention to detail, folks.

Same with iPhones. Gotta know when the plug is in the hole!

At least you know your cable is good.
