There are just some songs that make you feel like you should be doing something. This song makes you feel like you are on an epic quest. Listen to it while driving, you feel like you have the important task of getting to your destination. Maybe it's themental conditioning of RPG games, but this song is sweet. I have a whole bunch of songs like this, but this is the best.

Linky McLinkerson

So what are some other songs that give you a feeling, and what is that feeling? Maybe a gay topic, but there are certain songs like this that make you feel a part of something.

WARNING: Listening to this song while driving may make you feel the need to speed unnecessarily.

Dare I ask where that song is from?

I'm a regular listener at OCR and VGMix and I don't believe I've ever come across that particular file.

Related song.

Damn you for posting that link ast3r3x. Now I've got a bloody RPG song stuck in my head.

Anyway, no matter how dorky it is, I love all video game music, but RPG tends to have a nice epic flair to it.

OMG! I'm a hobbit! Off to destroy the One Ring Of Power! Doop doop de doop... *marches off*

Huh!? The music stopped? Aw crap. *shuffles back to computer*

If you have Command and Conquer Generals, there's some badass music in the data folders you can get. I particularly like the USA's action music. Makes me want to go kick ass. And drive/bike recklessly.

I'll upload one, just give me a minute to let it transfer. My connection isn't real fast, and I am still learning the OS X command line FTP. It's actually really easy and gives a MORE GRAPHICAL interpretation of a progress bar than Fetch.

http://www.tc.umn.edu/~resc0030/USA.mp3

The site went down as I was uploading the file. Now you can check it out. It's fun, and it doesn't sound like it was made entirely on a synth.

Argh... okay, check back in a little bit... didn't upload properly, maybe the command line FTP isn't as great as I thought...

Okay, it's done, you can listen now.

Well, I shuffled through a few songs and found some that might fit your "epic" description.

Triforce Majeur (nice swell around the 4:13 mark)
Thelonius Temple High
Ghosts of the Marble Hall
Spekkio the Brave

I've got a bunch more like this. You're not alone ast3r3x. Video game and cinema soundtracks can be very powerful and moving and are quite often overlooked by most people. I have a huge collection of both genres and I really enjoy the variety of styles and moods they can set.

Good to know I'm not crazy...or at least not the only one!

I found the Crimson Tide Theme especially epic in nature. It's not from an RPG (I love Chrono Trigger music, I have just about all of the songs), but it's among the best I've heard from a movie.

Blueflame

PS The movie itself is awesome too.

The song has the strongest "get up and do something" effect on me is Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson. It makes me think of morning on a beautiful and productive spring day. As for the "Epic Quest" thing, I'd have to go with Kashmir by Led Zeppelin.

When I was a kid, people who did wrong were punished, restricted, and forbidden. Now, when someone does wrong, all of the rest of us are punished, restricted, and forbidden... and the one who did the wrong is counselled and "understood" and fed ice cream.

hands down, the absolute best "action" music: The Rock

composed by that badass mofo Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, etc etc)

The best game music I listen to is from Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Thats just awesome.

"Lively up Yourself" - Bob Marley, some versions with the Wailers, some live...
(including the line "life is not a bed") has always been my favourite at this task

Ride of the Valkyries (Apocalypse now style) works for some classical moods, but there are also times when the themes from Bridge on the River Kwai or other classic films serve to trigger a surge of adrenaline. Most of the Blues Brothers soundtrack is good for heavier right foot, too.

And although I'd have to dig out the example I'm thinking of to be clear, I find that I associate some Ska numbers with bicycling... lots of pumping brass that seems to drive arms and legs like pistons.

here's something I recorded, very epic quest-ish

of course it is, it's a cover of a final fantasy song

Final Fantasy 6 overworld

The composer of all the final fantasy(and I believe chrono trigger) music is named Nobuo Uematsu, I really dig his stuff.

edit: Brad and Asterix are in my book, I love video game music

edit2: obligatory mention of the advantage

Thanks for the name of the composer for that music, now I know what to look for!

If you like that, you'd probably like the music from Rainbow Six games. If you would be interested I could seed a torrent of it for you. Hell I might even be able to send you the disc if I can find it, I don't play it anymore.

Uematsu was the composer for the Final Fantasy games, but he only assisted with Chrono Trigger. That honor falls primarily on Yasunori Mitsuda. Mitsuda also did the soundtrack for Xenogears.

Serious!

it's an homage to broken NES games when the colors and text gets all screwed up.

They used to have a really great site that was easy to navigate and look at, but then they decided to get all weird. Eitherway, they are still pretty awesome. and they are really talented players all of them.

google says...

This is a complete listing of all the files in the Nintendo directory, as of July 12, 2004 at 5:24 AM EDT.
"There are 2835 midi files in the Nintendo directory."

Hard to read, but with "134 from 43 games from various systems", try more game midis here

This is a student paper on Video Game Music, including citations to online interviews with Uematsu

Not sure if these were the ones you were looking for.

Oh man... I remember reading that when he first published it online in early 2000. I printed the whole damn thing out in a computer lab.

It's a very good read. I highly recommend it!

Funky music... I went on a "mission" to make a cuppa while it played. I think you need to change your warning tho. Perhaps something like this might be better.

OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available!
