I looked around and couldnt find anything on people replacing iPod batteries themselves so forgive me if its a repeated thread. Im thinking about replacing my 3G iPod battery myself. Does anyone have any recommendations on sites to buy from or the best battery out there. Im just getting sick of my iPod losing charge so quickly and I dont quite want to buy a 5G just yet. Any recommendations would really help. Also, if youve replaced it yourself, lemme know how easy/hard it is. Thanks in advance.

This post caught my eye as I just yesterday ordered a replacement battery for my 3G iPod. In looking around with my friend Google yesterday, I came across PDASmart (http://www.pdasmart.com/ipodpartscenter.htm). They have a 1100 mAh battery for $55. Its a little more expensive than some of the other sites I found, but most of the other sites also had 850 mAh batteries. 75% more life than the original was a little appealing to me. The $55 is a kit that you install yourself, though you can send them your iPod for $10 more (I think) and they'll do it for you.

As I just ordered yesterday, I cannot speak to any installation issues. Good luck!

That's very tempting...lemme know how your installation goes because I may order that. Thanks for the link!

Well depending on when you got it... you may get the 3G battery replaced for free (or get a "new" 3G iPod as they did with me) even if you don't have Applecare.

Otherwise Apple has a battery replacement program for $59 I believe...

Shhhh, I can't see!

yeah, i remember that settlement/lawsuit. i actually sent the paperwork back in and signed up, but i never heard anything else about it. how do you get the battery replaced for free OR the $50 credit (i believe that was the amount)?

Well I personally skipped the settlement and took mine into our local Apple Store this week because I still had Applecare in effect. They determined the battery was indeed faulty and issued me a replacement (refurb) 3G iPod.

I couldn't find anyone online that had received any settlement reimbursement but it seems there was some contention that wasn't resolved until December 2005, so maybe that's the holdup.

The iPod Support Page has details on the $59 battery replacement if you end up having to go that route.

Shhhh, I can't see!

My replacement iPod battery from PDA Smart came in the mail yesterday. Interestingly, it did not come with any printed directions, though it did come with a postcard telling you where to find them online. Once I managed to get the case open with the supplied tools (I was afraid I was going to crack my iPod open, literally), installation was relatively straightforward. The battery is currently charging, so no word yet on improved playback time, but my experience so far has been positive.
