Seems that the education market if going to have a 17" iMac again. Here in Apple's newsletter it talks about the new line up including a 17".

The New iMac line
The new 20-inch and 24-inch iMac deliver a 30 percent larger display, twice the memory, and twice the storage. The new iMac line also includes a 17-inch model starting at $899.
Haven't these been available for school orders since the demise of the eMac? I seem to recall they kept the 17" education version around after it was initially cut from the consumer market. Since it is under the "Leaders & Administrators" section of the news letter seems this might still be the case for school orders.

This is something I would be VERY interested in for my daughter. Since the new iMacs still have video out for connecting a second monitor this would be great for my daughter's school work. The biggest question I have at this point is the specs. Seems it would be a entry level Mini with a 17" screen slapped in front of it.

Seems this really should be in Apple Products since Apple is saying it's coming, but it's not here yet so I put it here.

Yeah, these have been around since the 17" was axed for the mass market. It's the same 1.83 GHz model that was available before.

I'm pretty sure that only institutions can buy it. I can see it when I go in to create a proposal, but I can't see it when I go in for personal purchases through the education store.

And I believe it's still got the GMA 950 in it, according to a piece at MacRumors.

I signed on to the education store, and didn't see anything about it. Only the 20" and 24" aluminum iMacs.

I assume this is still the white plastic model? Or did they actually make an aluminum and black 17" iMac?

That would be pretty neat to see.

But I'm guessing it's the same as before.

Yes, it's the last version of the 17" iMac, spec-for-spec. It's the white plastic case, with these specs:

1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory (BTO option: 2GB)
160GB hard drive
24x Combo drive
Intel GMA 950 graphics

Well, I'd still consider it, but not nearly as much without the newer graphics. Since this is the EDU only version it's not nearly as tempting.

That's the exact iMac my ex got for her Dad in Christmas 2007. He just surfs and e-mails, has a few songs in his iTunes library and a simple, point-and-click digital camera, so it more than meets his needs. In fact, I'm 98% sure that the only five apps he's ever launched have been Safari, Mail, iChat, iTunes and iPhoto.

But he loves it. His previous computer was a broken-down, iffy HP from about 1936 or so , so anything was going to be a nice step up.

It was a refurb, and I think she got it for $699-799

This edu-only iMac has shown up on the consumer refurb site several times recently. I think it's $699, when available.

Refurbished 20" iMacs (2.0 GHz, 1 GB, 250GB, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT) are currently available on the Apple Store for $799.

That seems like a tremendous deal.

No doubt! And for $50 more ($849), you can get the exact model I have (and love), with the 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 320GB hard drive and the ATi Radeon HD PRO 2600 with 256MB.

That was originally $1,499 (and I got it as a refurb in September for $1,049). Now it's even $200 cheaper!

It's amazing what kind of iMac you can get for $800-850 at the moment!

And I'm doing Illustrator, Photoshop, iMovie '09 and other stuff on it, so I know it would be a rocket and plenty computer for the surfer/Office/iTunes or student/home user!

And of course, I just bought a Mac mini.

But it's OK, because my Mac mini has all the new goodies, like DisplayPort and...the other new goodies.

(I'm kidding, of course. I didn't really need a monitor since I had a beautiful 19" HDTV, so the Mac mini still made sense for me.)

Oh, and

This one's sold out already. Though I'm thinking hard about the $850 one. Well worth the extra $50 if you asked me.

I agree. 400 more MHz, some more hard drive space and twice the video RAM.

Might not seem like anything big right now, but maybe in a couple of years it'll pay off and seem worth it?

I could've done a similar thing (there was a $999 refurb - 2.0GHz, 250GB, 128MB graphics...the exact iMac my Dad has - at the time I got mine), but for $50 more I thought those three things might "give it some extra life", and, in another couple of years, I'd probably be glad I had them (it isn't like OS X and the iLife/iWork stuff are going to get any less demanding (or smaller in footprint) in the coming years. Every little bit helps, and that's a nice little step up for only $50. IMO.

Oh yeah, for $50 it was a no-brainer. You just know that if the model were sold side-by-side new, Apple would charge $200-300 for those three improvements.

Well, they actually did.

My Dad's iMac and my iMac are from the first-generation aluminum and black models released in August 2007.

He bought the entry-level $1,199 model (2.0GHz, 250GB hard drive, 128MB graphics) new in September 2007 at the Knoxville Apple Store. The model above it, for $1,499, was the one I ended up with exactly one year later, via the refurb section (and for $1,049).

So, yeah...back in 2007-2008, Apple did indeed charge a full $300 more for those three features/specs!

That $1,499 model was the one I always had my eye on (and knew I'd get at some point), but I wound up holding on to my PowerBook G4 for another year, and then managed to save myself $450 for a machine that was still light years beyond what I was replacing! I'm glad I waited a bit and played it cool.

And now that I see the quality (and savings) represented by refurb Macs, I'm 98% sure that my next Mac will be a recent/current-generation refurb as well. $200-400 bucks off is nothing to sneeze at!

Well, look at this. Apple just introduced a 20" aluminum iMac for $899 to sell to schools. It has a slower CPU, a smaller hard drive and less RAM than the retail 20", but you can BTO the RAM and HDD. Even with 2 GB RAM and Applecare, it's cheaper than the next model up (the retail 20").

That's a very sweet deal (and would undoubtedly sell like hotcakes - laced with crack and free Penthouse subscriptions - if Apple made it available to the general public).

It just shows you that they can make (and sell) a decently-spec'd sub-$1,000 computer (a 20" AIO, no less). But only for a sliver of the population...because this $899 iMac isn't even available to individual education store buyers. Just administrations making large bulk purchases for a school.

At the very least, it would be nice of them to make them available to students and faculty too...

The good part is these machines will hit refurb at some point and be a great deal when they show up!

That's true (I assume they'd go to refurb...think they might stay within the school systems and education store?)

But if they do, then yeah...$799 20" aluminum iMacs.
