I didn't know such a thing was possible. But, really, in tech...what isn't?

The prices are steep, but, for my entire iDevice-using life (30-pin iPods and iPhones, Lightning iPhones and iPads), I've only ever bought Apple cables from an authorized reseller (Best Buy, Walmart, AT&T store, etc. if not an actual Apple Store). I know there are other good, trusted and legit brands - Belkin, etc. (and I have gone with those on a couple of occasions) - but I'd just prefer to go straight to the mothership for such things.

I've only ever really bought spare Lightning-to-USB cables (and one replacement 30-pin iPhone charger cable a decade ago), but I've never had a problem and I never worry.

You read those stories about the cheap, poorly-made knock-offs that burn entire houses/apartment complexes down. No thanks. I can be the cheapest person in seven counties, but even I don't feel right about some $1.99 no-name "Lightning" cable from eBay. And I've encouraged all those I know to, at the very least, stick with a legit, known name on this stuff, in original packaging, etc. Isn't worth it, IMO, the "savings" of going cheap on some things when the risk is a lost house, electrocution, destroyed gear, etc. I'll gladly drop $19 on an Apple Lightning-to-USB cable to never think about it again. $19 buys my peace of mind.

So aside from all that, now you gotta worry about this sort of stuff...chips in shady Lightning cables recording your keystrokes and passwords? Even more reason...stick with the proper stuff. Anyone buying excessively cheap, no-name cables from God-knows-where off of eBay...you're rolling the dice. I know plenty do it, and have done so for years.

But you're what's called "the exception that proves the rule". You've just been lucky.

PS - There's "cheap", and then there's "cheap". I realize there are quality third-party cables/accessories, from companies I've probably never heard of. Nobody needs to feel obligated to post them all here (unless you want to, for a public service). I get it. I'm just saying what works for me. And, at 52, I'm not going to just up and change; that period seems to be well behind me. I can swing the once-every-few-years $19 and still eat dinner.

I'm sticking this in here because it seems to belong, especially when it comes to hypocrisy. "You are not allowed to look at user's photos!" says the FTC.

Yikes.

How did that get onto people's phones? Without their knowledge/behind-the-scenes somehow? Or did people, for whatever reason, install it intentionally?

Because, you know..."open".

Sounds like BS. A WIFI module with 1 mile range in a USB cable?. There is no room for the needed hardware inside that. Maybe Bluetooth could work, but it sure wouldn't be good for a mile.

Be sure to always trust any lighting cable you find out there in the wild.

This is really cool if you asked me. I mean, horrible in almost every way possible, but yet so cool that they have been able to accomplish this and even "mass market" it.

In other words don’t leave your stuff unattended in a public space. Sounds like a wise move, even without hacker USB cables, but that’s just me.

Apple is delaying scanning all our photos.

Either I’m wired weird (completely possible) or I’m just missing/misunderstanding a lot (also entirely possible), but I just can’t seem to get juiced up over any of this.

But then I’ve never really been a “muh privacy!” type to start with. As someone who isn’t on social media, doesn’t do any banking/financial stuff online and who keeps nothing in the cloud, I guess a lot of this would fly right over me and not seem like that big a deal. I figure I trade a bit of privacy simply owning/using this sort of stuff. If none of the above were the case, anyone looking through anything of mine will simply die of boredom within 6-7 minutes.

Knock yourselves out, John Law and Mr. G-Man…its your life.

I have bigger, more immediate/pressing things I tend to worry about (encroaching gang activity and multiple daily shootings throughout Chattanooga, idiots not using their turn signals, the rising cost of chips/salsa and bananas, the lack of anything watchable on basic cable, etc.).

Maybe I’m wrong, but anytime I see half the population wigging over something, I tend to go “shiny squirrel alert”. *shrug*

While you (and I) have nothing to hide, it is more about the erosion of privacy. Especially when it is coming from Apple to put itself on a podium about their strong privacy stance.

Basically if no one stands up to the minor freedoms lost then we have no way to complain once "the line has been crossed".

To me, if all it takes to defeat this is not to use iCloud Photos then it is a complete waste of time.

Yeah.

I guess I can’t wrap my head around people engaging in this stuff using the cloud for it. Anyone that stupid deserves what they get.

I guess it is the default setting and most don’t change it. But all someone should have to do is see Jennifer Lawrence’s butthole* to realize maybe that’s not the best place to put your personal photos.

*I don’t mention this in an attempt at humor. I saw some of those Fappening leaks years back and, yes…that was one. Made me vow to never put anything on my phone out there in “the cloud”, even though I take no such pics. It’s the principle, mannn….

Here is the reason this is happening:

Apple is preparing to encrypt everything that lands on iCloud, including photos—specifically so that snooping types (including the gubmint) can't just peek in there and poke around (precisely because they do care about your privacy).

The question: That would give pedophiles the opportunity to upload and share all kinds of kiddie-porn with no one being the wiser, and Apple does not want that to happen. So, how to solve the problem while maintaining their legal obligation to report kiddie-porn to the copper-types? (Because Apple also cares about the costs associated with litigation, gubmint fines/arrests, and public outcry over such matters).

The answer: Treat everyone as a potential pedophile, scan all of their images before they get encrypted, apply a hash to said images, and then encrypt and upload those photos to iCloud with the *unencrypted* hash hanging out of the image like a big, red flag. Once images are on iCloud, have some software scan the hashes for anything pedo-y-ish and compare them to a known database, and notify the goons if something looks off.

Apple is not looking at our images, just the hashes (but, since the hashes are unencrypted, neither, actually, is the image ). The new problem: Hashes can be applied to other things at the whim of the gubmint, and suddenly you "ain't care 'bout m' prawvasee" folks might find yourselves at the business end of the goons because you held up the wrong sign at the wrong rally.

This is dangerous ground, and it sets a dangerous precedent. Whether or not you have anything to hide, things you take for granted may suddenly—and without warning—be hide-worthy, and you will no longer be able to hide them. It's BAD!

Who'da though you can't trust a clown with your data?

Apparently McDonalds did a horrible job with their site coding and exposed a fair bit of data from their DB. Glad they don't have any of my info.

All these restaurants - fast food and sitdown alike - all have these programs and points and apps and stuff to sign up for (with all your info).

How about, instead, just shut up and give me a hamburger or burrito without all the fuss and production, and wanting to “know” me? I don’t participate/belong to any of those things, but I still get asked or shilled on it at places.

With the way so many of these outfits are dropping the ball, I’m not about to sign up for your Burger Baron Rewards Bonanza, with my name, address, phone number and email kept so carelessly and winding up who-knows-where.

I just want food. I don’t need to be a points-earning, app-tracked TacoTitan or whatever. I give you $5, you (without any marketing pitch or canned spiel) hand me some food. That’s as far as it needs to go, honestly.

That is the thing right there. Why would I want them to track me more than with the debit card I use. Heck I try to use cash the 6 times a year I visit one of those places so there isn't even that to track me by.

What is funny is that as security minded as I am, I used to grab all the apps when they first came out... then reality hit me and I deleted all of them.

I AM security minded and yet I was grabbing them so imagine those who think nothing of security or privacy. "Free mini Frosty, sign me up!"

No kidding, every company out there now is asking for emails to sign up for virtual receipts and such. ‘No, thanks, just the paper copy’. Trying to act green, just to get more of your info and push junk to your inbox.

Exactly. All the restaurants, all the pharmacies, the two big home/hardware joints (the blue one and the orange one ), Target, Walmart, every gas station/convenience store, etc. Every one of them, for the past 5-10 years now, wanting my stuff.

No, you went decades without it, so quit acting like it’s now suddenly required or automatically part of the process. You don’t need my email if I want a box of cough drops or a drill bit. Bug off.

Price stuff reasonably to start with and you don’t need all these “perks”, rewards, points, “special member savings”, etc. Me saving .42 on a stick of deodorant isn’t worth you mishandling/misusing my email, phone number, etc. Because I know you will, first chance you get.

I have .42 and I’ll pay it, viewing it as a STFU tax.

Sigh. Facebook glasses.

Is there anyone out there that trusts anyone who would wear these fool things? This one isn't a matter of trusting the maker, but the foolish look-at-me's that would wear them.

I could think up some scenarios, but Scates can do it better than me.

Oh, it's much worse than that. The Google glasses were bad. But, now, Facebook? Every stupid thing these things see will get dumped straight to the attention whore's FB page. It stinks, and badly.

You know, I might have cared but after deleting my FB account (and hung my head in shame for ever having one), I followed up with blocking all DNS requests for an FB owned domain on my network, I don't care what happened on there. It is a pit of despair to the 10th degree.

So what, exactly, do these glasses do? What do they offer/do that a smartphone doesn't, other than make the owner punchable?

As someone not on social media, I'm never the target for these things. But who is?

Yep, this makes it ok to hit someone wearing glasses.

You know, it is a real shame that Ray-ban got in the mix. I used to love my Wayfarers. I don't know that I'll support them again after agreeing to work with FB. :shudders:
