I must admit, it was deliberately ambiguous.

anamorphosis: a distorted projection or drawing that appears normal when viewed from a particular point or with a suitable mirror or lens.

No particular reason. Just thought it was a neat word.

Oh, and it reminds me of Windows.

steganography: the art and science of writing hidden messages in such a way that no one, apart from the sender and intended recipient, suspects the existence of the message.

The idea being that you go cryptography one better by embedding your message in such a way no one suspects that there's any message at all. That can range from microdots to apparently benign texts to slipping bits of data into image files.

That which doesn't kill you weakens you slightly and makes you less able to cope until you're completely incapacitated

Or, perhaps, by hiding the message "This Product Sucks™" within the word "Windows®".

Considering the current political situation, here are some fun words for the day:

murder
: the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another

assassinate: murder (an important person) in a surprise attack for political or religious reasons

terrorism: the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.

human shield: a person or group of people held near a potential target to deter attack.

Fine.

Wikipedia: idiom: an expression, word, or phrase that has a figurative meaning that is comprehended in regard to a common use of that expression that is separate from the literal meaning or definition of the words of which it is made

Dictionary.com: idiomatic: peculiar to or characteristic of a particular language or dialect

Merriam-Webster: idiomatic: peculiar to a particular group, individual, or style

Take your pick. They all say roughly the same thing.

Off topic but related to English: What is the deal with this grammatical nonsense I'm starting to see everywhere now? It's when people take the words "to be" out of the sentence "needs to be fixed", so all they say is "needs fixed".

Did I miss something? Is that considered acceptable English now? "That door needs fixed." What? You could say "that door needs fixing" or "that door needs to be fixed", right? It's spreading like some kind of virus. I'm starting to see it everywhere now, in emails at work, on facebook, everywhere. "That meeting needs scheduled." "My dog needs fed."

It's like how the internet has made it easier for people to pick up on how to spell things wrong, which then propagates to everybody who doesn't know any better. Which is most people, apparently. And then the misspelling starts to become the accepted way of spelling it.

"Oh pardon me sir, but my balls need scratched."

Sweet jesus I haven't encountered that yet. Maybe we can just keep going and get rid of tenses: the door needs fix, the dog needs feed, the halfwit needs kill.

I was listening to NPR and there was a piece on some girl looking for college funding, I imagine the intent was to elicit empathy with the plucky gal. But in every recorded interview segment she came off sounding like a complete moron on which a college education would be a complete waste. The culprit was that old standby "like." "He was like all enthusiastic, and I was like all excited, but then he was like 'Oh maybe not' and I was like 'Wait, what's up?" and then my girlfriend was like getting offers and I was like bummed and it was like pretty disappointing." No doubt, since college scholarship programs are generally like discriminating. Maybe she need slap.

It's intentional. Ever seen lolcat pics? It's the type of grammar used therein. Or at least it's an intentional use of subgroup dialectical when I do it. I don't know if the people you're seeing doing it are doing it intentionally because they've seen the funny talk on the internet, or if it's just that this kind of net grammar (and also texting spelling/grammar) are moving out of their subgroup-marker status and into the broader realm of general consciousness or not. If it's the latter, it could be interesting to follow and see if eventually we develop two very distinct English groups, standard/formal language for certain environments only, and this more abbreviated variant for general usage.

For a class on linguistic anthropology a few years back, I did a paper on the evolution of lolcat-style grammar from a set of memes used by a tiny subgrouping of a subgroup to something robust enough to serve as an actual dialect, and I discussed the cultural relevance of people using it (basically, it serves as a way of proving one is part of the ingroup). It was actually a really good topic to choose, as with a lot of linganth you can look at language's influence on culture but you're usually looking at really long timespans. Internet memetic jargon moves so fast that it went from an obscure thing to an actual dialect with lexicon in a few short years.

All I can promise you is that the people who I've seen doing it are not doing it humorously. They're all serious about using words like that. They all need killed, or at the very least they need slapped.

This is what I was saying about people doing things wrong, either accidentally or on purpose because it's funny, but then it catches on and starts to become "the right way" of doing it because people don't know any better.

Keep an eye out for this trend of taking "to be" out of sentences. It reads really bizarrely because it looks like you're using present and past tense right next to each other. "Needs fixed". "Wants punched".
