Well, in this case it was easy because it's on CNN's homepage...
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/law/11/19...ape/index.html Holy. Crap. I'm still grappling with the whole idea of 12-14 year olds running around, doing some pretty horrific, brutal stuff to one another. I never thought it got down to the 8-9 set. I'm still thinking this story has to have those ages wrong... Honestly, at that age I didn't know the first thing about such stuff. I knew that I liked Adrienne Barbeau's round knockers on TV, but I couldn't really tell you why. And the idea of "sex" (much less forcing myself on someone) was completely alien to me (the "forcing myself" still is, of course). I really didn't start putting this kind of thing together until sixth grade or so. I might've had a rough, very vague idea of things in a very general sense (I knew some of the words and anatomy), but not really at eight or nine years of age. I didn't become a devastating kickball stud/playground ladies man until I was 11-12. But at eight, I was still picking my nose in public, wearing my shirts backwards or inside-out, rocking the Moe Howard haircut and was fairly convinced that my female classmates and neighbors had dangerous "girl germs/cooties"...I wanted little-to-nothing to do with the fairer sex at the age of eight and nine. So what in the world is going on in these lives that eight- and nine-year-olds are raping 11-year-olds, threatening her with rocks beforehand? I know I ask this quite a bit, but honestly...WTF?!? WTF x25?!? This stuff is just getting defined down, lower and lower. I've got a little four-year-old niece (and a 20-month-old nephew). I sometimes shudder when I think about what they might face in the coming years, the stuff that is simply "there" and happens among increasingly younger kids. There's no telling the kind of freaky shit I'll be hearing my sister tell me about that her kids encountered or dealt with at school on any given day in a few years. I think it's a blessing I never had kids, because I read stuff like this and all I would do, every day, is worry and think about them. This stuff bothers me as a single, childless man; I can't imagine what it would do to me as a father, with my own to look after and worry about. I don't think I would know how to best process that. I'm sure I would learn, and it would just happen. But, sitting here and not really knowing what it's like, it's tough to imagine. Would you ever think this is anything you'd worry about, or expect, from people of that age? I don't care if it's "rare", or "isn't happening all the time" (and we don't really know that). That's not the point. It happened, and that just blows my mind. It really does. I read the story half an hour ago, and I'm still sitting here, pondering the logistics and mechanics of it all, and the thinking behind it...the "why" and so forth. It's about the worst thing I think I've read about (and you know me; I post a lot of weird, OMG! crap here from time to time). I just had no idea. Does something like that point to abuse, do you think? Are they acting out something they've seen or had done to them at some point? Something that would even put this type of thought or notion into the boys? Where would they think to do this? Or have that been sneaking into their older brother's porno stash or something? Where does this thinking enter the mind of such a young kid? I guess that's what I'm not able to grasp... I think back to how I was at that age, and it's such a far-removed thing. Are these forever-wrecked little lives? How does an 11-year-old girl work all this out in her head? What goes through the heads of the boys? I think I know things, but stories like this make me feel so sheltered and "out of the loop"... Last edited by psmith2.0 : 2007-11-20 at 01:18. |

I blame the parents. When are people going to step up and take responsibility for their kids? You know - TEACH THEM VALUES and what is socially acceptable?
Its a parents job to know whats going into their kids brains, what music they are listening to, what they are watching on TV, who they are hanging with ... this is what happens when you let kids go LORD OF THE FLIES. |

On the flip side you also have to ponder if it was consensual and is lying because she fears repercussions from her parents and the rest of the population.

I agree, but it kinda circles back to what I've talked about here a good bit before: there are some useless, unqualified nimrods having kids. To them, it's just "something you do". And if you're not raising them right and instilling them with the proper stuff, is this what happens? I always says "they become problems for the rest of us".
Yeah, something is obviously missing here because I don't think a little boy (three of them) who have been raised with even the slightest bit of attention and caring would, on their own, go down that road. I wonder about the level of shock or outrage among the families. Is it there? The dad of one of the boys seems to blithely play it off as a situation where "no force was involved", as though it's normal for three-on-one grade-school group session to take place. "No, my boy didn't rape nobody!" Such a weird disconnect. I'm just getting this odd feeling that nobody was taken by complete shock and surprise... And then it makes me wonder even more...what is going on in those lives? What are they seeing and hearing, day-to-day? |

Think about her life, and what she's probably in for. What her name is associated with (if indeed that was the case). That's gonna follow her, and it's going to affect everything and every person she comes into contact with. You don't think guys will be going hard at her in junior high and high school? That's a hard thing for a girl to get out from under (we had a few in my school, back in the day; always known as "that girl who [fill in the blank]...". Why do I see "unwed teenage mother" in this girl's future? So yeah, if it was consensual it's a whole other type of "ugh...WTF?!?" It's not suddenly "good", either way ("rape" or not). Just different, but still pretty troubling, for a whole other set of reasons. I guess I'm more naive than I want to admit... Eight-years-old... Man. |

Not that an 11 year old can legally consent to such a thing, something makes me I doubt that she said to three younger boys, "hey lets go at it".

Oh yeah, I know.
The judge has implemented a gag order over the entire thing, so the article says nothing else can really be learned or discussed (and with kids that young, that's expected and for the best). There's no telling what's going on. On one hand, I'd like to think an 11-year-old girl wouldn't be such a little game "party girl" (then again, I'm pretty naive and out-of-the-loop on that stuff). But if she's not, then you're stuck with the notion of a trio of eight- and nine-year-old gang rapers. Both of those scenarios suck. There's no good, "ah, that's a relief!" angle to this no matter what the truth turns out to be. You've either got a pre-teen Jenna Jameson (who is probably in for a rough road in the coming years unless she makes some changes), or a trio of future Georgia Department of Corrections hall-of-famers. I'm not sure which is worse... I think it just makes me sad to see such young lives already touched this way. 15-20 year olds don't deal with this stuff worth a damn; what are the chances that 8-11 year olds will, you know? Just gives me the creepy chills...you can almost map out those particular courses. |
