I concur.

I don't know what the time-frame is with regards to the aquarium idea (fish scales), but I'd love to see a photo when the project is done / our memorial is added to the existing structure. Also I think there was another charity involved (in fact I'm pretty sure there was), so I'm also curious to know how much we raised and whether any type of memorial was involved with that donation as well.

I think it will help people find some measure of closure....

...into the light of a dark black night.

Ah, sorry about the trouble with the third file on the previous page. Hopefully it'll work here now.

As for the donations, we'll have to get those numbers from Eric (alcimedes) since the account is in his name.

Last I checked people had donated just over $800. Approx. $250 were sent as flowers. If someone would like to start a thread about which fish scale(s) to go with (include a poll) and another thread about what charity to send the extra money to that would be great.

I've got a chunk of job turmoil in the works for the next three weeks and am going to be pretty swamped. Sorry for the delay.

Maybe I'll make this later tonight, but we should get all the possibilities and vote on the 10 best or so. Then have a vote on the best of those. So we'd need a poll with A LOT of options to help narrow it down, then a poll with less to pick the best of the best.

Also I think everyone should know that the fish scales are sold out.

I just got a call from somebody both Jack and I knew -- we hadn't been in touch much since I stopped doing the MacWorld circuit, so when he sent email asking me to call him, I knew it was something serious.

I met Jack while he was on his grand loot-collecting competition and we struck up an easy, productive working relationship. The Mac3d guys are among my fondest memories of running the National Macintosh Gaming Championships for IDG.

When D. asked if I knew, my heart dropped through the floor -- knew what? And when he told me, I prayed for a prank or a con or a joke.

My prayers are with Jack's friends and family.

LoCash didn't know me. We never had a conversation, he probably never even saw my name here. But I saw his posts, and I liked him. All I know of him is preserved on this site, and I wish I had gotten to know him.

A friend of mine used to tell me, "You have to be smart to be funny." LoCash must have been a damn genius.

i'm sorry for posting this so late, but i couldn't think of anything to say until now. i knew Jack from growing up in the same neighborhood in Atlanta. we used to do all nighters of watching movies and playing video games. i remember having an argument with him while eating sushi over wether or not there were ugly women in Japan. those were great times.

Fuck. I cannot believe this. Hadn't visited AN since last year. Get back to this awful news, two months after the fact. WTF?

RIP, Jack! You are obviously missed.

Thanks everyone for sharing stories. I'll forever remember "tap it n zap it."

And we still don't know what the hell happened to Jack! Damn it.

I've been waiting for a true sub-PowerBook for more than 10 years. The 11-inch MacBook Air finally delivers on all counts! It beats the hell out of both my PowerBook 2400c and my 12-inch PowerBook G4 -- no contest whatsoever.

BTW, the money donated topped out at ~$750 dollars (after the flower arrangement). It's going to be donated to breast cancer research, which was another charity Jack wanted to support. Some donations have still been coming in, and I wanted to transfer it all in one lump sum. Please PM me with any questions.

You guys really outdid yourselves with your giving, Jack would be proud.

I know this thread has been dead for a while, but I felt the need to post again...sorry if it's inappropriate or not timed well for someone.

I was reading through some old private messages last night and came across a handful that Jack and I had sent back and forth about various different things and a few of them made me laugh out loud even though they were years old and I had read them all before. So I started to search around for threads and posts that Jack had made, just because I was thinking about him.

I started in the Revolution forums, in the regular forums, as well as other places. The more I read, the more I could feel a tight feeling in the pit of my stomach and a heavy feeling in my heart. I came to this thread which I had never really allowed myself to read too much of it for various different reasons.

I started on page one with Taft's original post that informed us all of the terrible news. Almost as soon as I read that I started to cry. I sat here until the wee hours of the morning reading this whole thread, clicking on almost every single one of it's links and downloading the various things people had posted to it. I had tears in my eyes the whole time.

I don't really know why I'm saying this, or why I waited months to read this thread, but I felt I needed to add something more than the obligatory condolences. I've never been so touched by someone that I never had the pleasure of knowing personally. I feel blessed though that I got to interact with him in the ways that I did. Jack was a truly great man who made great things happen, both in his real life and in his cyber life.

We were all lucky to have Jack as a friend and as an administrator of AppleNova. It's wonderful to know that his legacy will live on for probably as long as the internet lives on. This will always be the house that Jack built, and I for one count myself lucky to have been invited through its doors and I feel even luckier that Jack blessed us with his presence, talent, and wicked sense of humor, if only for a short time.

The brightest stars burn out much to quickly. Rest in peace friend, rest in peace.

I was thinking about Jack today, too. I went back to re-read the thread where he posted my Congo paper, and I was getting to the point where I could finally laugh about the funny shit like that he used to pull on me. (Did he ever mention the 3 foot Keebler Elf I got in the mail one day from Atlanta?)

Then I read murbot's comment: "Dude, this is just insanely hilarious. I can't believe you let it go this far.

Classic. You guys will still be talking about this one in 10 years."

I guess not.

Were you the one where he messed with your login password, and set the password hint to something about "As I sat there calmly sitting, I saw the dead carry the living."

If so, you have to retell that story. Otherwise if it's not you, I'll go back into the chat logs and dig it up. Great prank.

The bit about the login password was me, too. That was a real bastard of a prank. I had bought a used iBook off Craigslist in Boston (this was when Jack was going to art school out there.) So, I had him check it out for me, make sure it was legit, pay the guy, and FedEx it to me. Of course, when I got it (at *work* mind you - I was working at a university bookstore at the time), he had changed the login screen and all other possible elements to explicit Elf Porn images. (You know, naked girls with fake elf ears...not sure where he found that stuff...) He had set the password hint to that riddle, "As I sat there calmly sitting, I saw the dead carry the living." So my boss walks by as I'm frantically trying to guess the password, and he thinks the elf porn theme is pretty interesting. For the life of me, I can't figure out the riddle, so I google it in various iterations until I finally come up with an answer. It turns out that a ship - dead trees - carries living men. So, obviously, the answer was "ship" or some other word that meant that. "Ship" didn't work, so I grabbed a thesaurus from a nearby shelf and tried every other word for it I could find. I even tried misspellings. Nothing worked. I tried on and off all day long.

Finally, I called Jack when I got home. Of course, it turned out that he was messing with me (as usual) and the password had nothing whatsoever to do with that riddle.

And now my boss and co-workers thought I was in some kind of Fed-Ex based Elf Porn ring.

You'll probably hate me for admitting this, but I helped Jack figure out how and what files to modify (such as the login screen) for that prank. I'll have to dig around to see if I still have those logs anywhere.

Good times.

I got this from jack's dad the other day. I'd send him an e-mail to let him know we'd contributed the money donated to a breast cancer research fund. He asked me to share his reply.

I really like this post that you wrote, Sam, mainly because I feel the same way you do; and it makes me very glad to know that at least one of you has deep and long-lasting emotions about Jack.

I think of him quite often, always with a great sadness; and always with the foolish and fleeting hope that maybe he's still around somewhere - that he didn't really die, but assumed another identity for some reason and is living a secret life in Oregon, the Caribbean, or the south of France.

As each month passes, I wonder how many of you still think of him, as I do. I picture each of us going on with our lives as if nothing had happened, and I reflect upon how appallingly short-lived is our impact on this world.

That's why, Sam, your post makes me realize that plenty of you probably think of Jack just as frequently and sadly as I do. For some reason, that makes me feel a little better - I guess because I am reassured that he *is* and will continue to be remembered.

When I think of how incredibly bright, talented and unique Jack was, with 'such' plans for the future, I 'always' cry at the tragedy of losing his irreplaceable spark from our world. He was just *beginning* his life; and now... he's gone forever.

Okay, enough from me. I really do apologize if this seems maudlin.

I always see this thread and his name, and I think for a second he is back and posting. I guess it's because I didn't know him more than talking to him 2-3 times a week on IM, or because I wasn't at the funeral for it to be final. It's just hard to believe.

No way he's take another identity though, no name better than Jack Frost!
