Does anyone know what the "optical looking devices" on the motherboard under the SATA connectors are for?

Stared and stared, but can't figure out the function. It could "look" for a drive in place if a full size HD is there, but can't sense a small SSD mounted on the sled. Why would it need to optically sense a drive anyway?
