I'll start:
  • The camera. Love the focusing thingy, and it takes pretty pictures. Video too, of course.
  • Speed. Wow. So much faster.
  • 3G. Such a big step up from EDGE, it make things like Google Maps actually usable. Love it.
  • Compass. Yeah, I know, but I think it's really neat.

What else?

Specifics, dammit!

How "fast"? In what ways, exactly? Launching apps? Navigating around them? That sort of thing? Everything just seems more nimble and responsive, across the board?

Yeah, I can't wait to give EDGE a kick in the butt "bye".

Do you have a way to post any pics or video? Or e-mail them to me?

My one big question/curiosity point: go film some video for a set amount of time (one minute or, if you have the time, five minutes) and then tell us the file resulting file size. I'm curious how much space video shot on a new iPhone takes up.

Speed.

And, yeah - did I mention speed? Fast typing, fast browsing, fast app loading and quitting - WOW.

Video and photos are very cool so far, but I haven't entered into "the outside world" for heavy testing yet.

3G speed (at least in my apt) have varied widely. It's downloaded as fast as 2226 kB/s, and as slow as 241 kB/s. The slowest speeds were when I first tried, and it's been pretty fast since then.

Given your persistence on this, and the multitude of members, you'll prolly have an answer by weekend's end.

Related question: How long does it take you to upload the clip to either server space or YouTube?

Yep.

;D

It's like being on WiFi all the time. It's really a LOT faster than EDGE. Speed tests say around 1Mb/s on 3G, so it's clearly slower than most WiFi, but it feels a lot faster.

Also, apps open and close much faster. All those seconds you lose waiting for stuff to happen on the old iPhone have been eliminated.

I'll take some video later or tomorrow to see how much space it needs. I've done a bit of our dog etc., but it doesn't show file size on the device.

Do you notice that the accelerometer responds faster as well?

I know.

That's just the one "unknown" I wasn't sure about. Everything else, obviously, is just great. I just didn't want to get a 16GB and then find out that a few snippets of video - three minutes here, two minutes there, five minutes here, etc. - ate into 10-12GB.

Because I truly don't know how to calculate it (not being all that hip, on a technical level, to the digital video jive).

Yeah, someone will have some hard info on this posted within a day or so.

Waiting for 4G-HD.

Still under contract with 3G, not going to pay the stupid upgrade fee.

I think it's Norris'. But I'm shaky on that as well. Brad or someone will know.

So wait...did you get one?! Or are you just being a pot-stirrer?

From MacRumors: a a quick video on YouTube, filmed and uploaded by, the new iPhone.

Not bad.

The home/amateur porn and sexting thing is going to go through the roof now. It's just too damn easy...

And I've gotten a bit of an answer on my video/file size question. Someone posted this clip, which is 8.5MB. I timed it, and it's exactly 20 seconds.

So that means a minute of video from the iPhone 3G S should take up about 25.5MB (8.5 x 3). So about 127.5 for five minutes of video (25.5 x 5). And so on. Give or take. A good enough ballpark.

Right?

If so, you should be able to film something for 30 solid minutes, and that's only going to be about 765MB. If the above is accurate, and I'm not leaving anything out, that certainly makes my "16 or 32?" decision easier. 16GB should be plenty, because a) I'm not going to be filming 30-60 minute chunks of stuff on a daily, ongoing basis, and b) even if I did, it'll get offloaded to my Mac anyway.

For typical 3-5 minutes bursts of filming (playing a song, telling a joke, performing a prank, concert or ballgame footage, some birthday party captures, drunk girls at the bar lifting their shirts and yelling "woo-hoo!", etc.), 16GB (even with apps, music and photos) should hold plenty for the average person (me).

That's good to know...I was hoping I could get away with only spending $199.

It's Norris's. It would be Norris' is there was a multiple individuals named Norri, and they all owned something. I think.

Preliminary filesize tests with a couple short videos:

0:18 - 3.1 MB
1:27 - 16.3 MB

Looks like about 1.8 MB for every 10 seconds, or roughly 10 MB per minute.

Modern convention is that you treat names that end in s the same way as any other name, so it'd be Norris's. There are those who insist that biblical figures like Jesus and Moses should, for some reason, not get the additional s after their apostrophes, but I think that's bizarre.

My shiny new 32 GB iPhone 3G[s] is my first iPhone (been waiting two years for 32 GB…), so I won't be making any comparisons. I will say, however, that it is awesome!

Wow, that's odd. But that's even better than my example above, where it was 8.5MB for 20 seconds.

What could the differences be? Are there controls on the iPhone that let you adjust quality or compression? What could account for such a discrepancy?

But I do like your numbers better! Makes my decision even that much easier.

BTW, check out this side-by-send web rendering drag race. The 3G [S] smokes the 3G, loading the page in six seconds, vs. 12 on the other. So yeah...2x as fast, indeed. At least on this one test.

My phone is not activated yet, but luckily it unlocks and lets you play with everything using wifi. It's very obvious that the hardware was a bottleneck.

The Edge phone was a "I'll surf to a mostly text site if I need it and have time" even over wifi, it was a bit clunky. Now it's zipzipzipzip and I had six safari windows open with no effort. If 3G is close to this it was a smart upgrade. I actually opted to send a picture using the phone rather than sit down at the computer in the room. This is even more "computer in your pocket".

Typing is major and an absolute dream. No lag at all so far.

Many apps I ignored mostly (like youtube) are now viable.

3G and compass are great, I walked around the back yard and watched it move a bit (not exact, but it can tell I'm moving, the compass is very responsive.)

New headphones are great. I killed two consecutive first version pairs on my Edge - the weak spot is the microphone clicker which can short out or collapse so it doesn't click. I ended up buying a $35 set off a website that designed them with mic for iphone. I killed that too. I finally decided I'd have to forego the mic and used a sturdy pair pair of Sony earbuds lasted the duration. I refuse to pay more than $40 for headphones that are going to break. I probably will get applecare just to replace my headphones over and over this time. I like the volume controls. Voice command is awesome, however I mostly listen to podcasts which are often strangely titled and it won't recognize the name. Hopefully they fixed the design flaws with this new version.

There's no longer an "oh crap I hit this game app by mistake so I have to wait for it to open so I can close it." You don't wait. It's like the change from dialup to broadband.

The whole phone feels tighter and better designed, the buttons are quiet and require a definite press.
I watched a bit of youtube on wifi on the Edge phone, now I love that I can click links in twitter posts!

I moved from EDGE iPhone to 3G S and in my very unscientific test, it took 5-one-thousands to launch Twitterriffic on the original iPhone and almost 1-one-thousand on the 3G S. Like I said, very unscientific, but it's a pretty good representation of the difference in speed. It's pretty awesome actually.

90% of statistics can be made to say anything 50% of the time.

I'm really exited to see more video examples. Does anyone know if there is a limit or cap on how long one can record? I really want this phone, but since I already have two cameras that record video I can't justify upgrading from my 1st gen just yet. It looks like a sweet device!

I would guess as long as you have free space on the phone, you can record. I would guess it might be squirrelly if you hit the top of the hard drive. I'm not sure if anyone has tried this yet.

The video seems pretty compact and unless you're trying to take some long video for time lapse or your phone is full of music, you should be okay. See the other threads for MB per recording time.

Actually, either is fine for the possessive. I personally prefer the oldschool s', but you can also add an additional s. As mentioned, it's becoming more common for people to do the latter.

I also prefer the Oxford comma, but that's a story for another time...

The latter. I'm going to wait a couple of weeks and go talk to the at&t folk. The last time I held one in my hand I felt like it was kind of a brick (compared to my Touch, at least), but if I know I'm giving my Touch away I'd have a bit more perspective and could deal with the fatassedness. It's still not a done deal in my head, mind you, and I'm kind of leaning towards the month-to-month thing. On the one hand I'd be ponying up way too much cash, but on the other I wouldn't be tied down to one provider for 2 years.

Yes, I have commitment issues.

So it goes.

I went to the AT&T store in Evanston (I'm chillin with my friend who lives in the Chicago suburbs for a week) and they only had one 32GB Black one. F that, white all the way.

I went to the Apple Store in Skokie and the line was so long that it wouldn't be depleted before the store would close 2 hours later.

Tomorrow we go to the flagship store in downtown Chicago. If they don't have my iPhone, nobody will.

It's calling meeeeeeeeeee.....

I've come to terms with the fact that I will be spending $300 every summer until I die or iPhone dies. Whichever comes first.

Some of the video footage shot by the new iPhone GS is amazing.
All I can say is buh-bye Flip and Kodak.
Well okay, they have their place, but with editing and YouTube downloads, this iPhone has effectively knocked the wind out of many of the low end SD Camcorders.

Here's a quick stupid video taken quickly and narrated stupidly. But it does cover some important topics so it's probably worth watching. Also the upload to YouTube really degraded the quality, it looks a lot better just watching it from the desktop or in iPhoto.

Here it is. Everything was done on the iPhone, including shooting the video, cropping it, upping it to YouTube, copying the link and pasting it here.
