So Microsoft unveiled "Windows Live", their attempt to tap into the markets they haven't touched yet (mainly users of Macs and Linux), this afternoon. However, it doesn't work with Firefox. Unsurprising as it is, I find it rather humorous that Microsoft is trying to create this web portal to compete with Google, but it doesn't work with the #2 web browser (which is #1 on Linux). Not a surprise at all, but very, very stupid, IMO. See their new stuff here: Live.com

[edit]
I just noticed something. Their page says it doesn't support firefox, but most of the features work. Maybe it'll be like their other bastardized web pages that only half work.

uuhhh customizable portals have been around since like 1995
microsoft didn't rip anything off google... (in this case*)

*and they both may well have ripped it off some other company like netscape or yahoo ten years ago

That's all you see because it's horribly broken in Safari.

It only fully "works" with Internet Explorer 6+ on Windows.

Can't say if it's a better search engine or not, I doubt it, but if you do a search, it basically is copying googles setup. But what do you know, MSN's is harder to read IMHO, but there are also more ads.

On my Windows machine here at work (where I expected it to work right off), I get:

Firefox Users
Firefox support is coming soon. Please be patient :-)

The happy face makes me happy.

Ugh.

Where do you get the idea that it's supposed to tap into the Mac and Linux markets?

All their Live stuff is targeted at Windows users as far as I can see.

Don't worry your not missing out! It's not big and it's not clever!

For example. The NEW live email system, is simply a list of your latest hotmail messages on a nice clean screen. When you actually click one to read it, guess where you end up? Yep, that's right, slap bang into standard MSN/hotmail system - all those crappy bevels and adverts - yeah thanks for the great "new" product MS!

OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available!

For now, yes. However, MSN Hotmail will be replaced by Windows Live Mail, which will look vastly different.

I like how someone at Information Week put it:

Quote:
The Windows Live site is your basic customizable home page. It's got e-mail. It's got online bookmarks. You can do Windows Messenger instant-messaging from that page. You can search the Web. These technologies were fresh and innovative during the Clinton Administration. Today? Not so much.

Well. It might have a positive side effect. Apple could be persuaded to offer .mac for free as a competitive counter-measure

The Register ran a story under the sub heading ".NET done - now let's get Google". Now Microsoft have decided they've conquered/got fed up with XML and web services they need a new target.
