One of the reasons that iPads haven't completely taken over the world is because eyestrain on backlit screens is still an issue, especially with younger and older eyes. E-Ink has been trying for years to develop a colour paper alternative. Like nuclear fusion, every time you check in, it's five years away.

I was intrigued to read about this TCL tablet that has narrowed the gap with paper by reducing eyestrain considerably.

Anyone know how this compares to the glass on the iPad screen?

Any chance we will see much better e-Reading on Apple tablets soon? This seems much more useful than a folding iPhone.

I tired reading on my iPad Pro for a bit, but just couldn't get into it. I'd just switch away to another app if I saw something come in and reading along form on the iPad just didn't work for me.

I got a Kobo and it's been great.

No more Twitter. It's Mastodon now.

My mom was asking about an eReader for a while now so she can move away from just Amazon books. If we can get something that could read .mobi/epub and Amazon format it would be awesome... but that doesn't seem to be an option.

I’ve used iBooks, and a few other reading apps, a decent amount on my iPad and iPhone, works well enough. Still prefer reading a physical book most of the time.

My mom loves NOT having physical books given how many she goes through being retired and all. So for her, she is looking for a good eReader that isn't forced through Amazon.

She tried an iPad mini but doesn't like it and wants something different but loves her Amazon Oasis.

There's an an Accessibility toggle that can mitigate the screen brightness. This is the hack I came across for using my devices at night with no eye strain, even in complete dark.

Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut > Reduce White Point.

Now when I triple-click the power button, the screen dims a great deal. It's so effective I usually have to raise the brightness a little in order to make text legible again.
