We've recently had the Powerbook update, so what about the update to the cheaper line of notebooks, the iBook? Will the next update be worth it? I've only heard 1.25GHz, a .05GHz update, for the 12" version. The only intriguing feature of the Powerbook line (to me at least) is the scrolling trackpad. Will that be included in the new iBooks? If it has that on the cheapest iBook, I'm sold.

If past update trends are any indication, update will probably occur in the April-May timeframe.

I wouldn't expect much more than a small speed bump, the scrolling trackpad seems reasonable as well.

Damn, I should have held another 'guess the next update' game... Well next time I guess. And I'll be sure to take a digi with me next time should a donation be the prize. Sigh, just don't have the time these days for stuff like this. . .

The next iBook update will be a major update. Very possible they will change the type of casing its in.

And to be fair, there are already a few of these threads floating around...this one comes to mind immediately, but a quick search turns up a few more asking more or less the same question.

And the answer? Who knows?

So it goes.

I remember when I had my eyes set on an iBook. Kinda still do, but the time is not right. Gotta be smart about it... when I really wanted and needed one I did not have the cash, but now that I have the cash I can't justify a laptop. (but I still want one) Lousy will power.

At least keep your stories straight.

From that other thread, where you speculated:

14" 1.5 GHz. 80GB HD. 512MB ram, 64MB video ram.
Which is NOT a major update.

That's a fairly major update. But i've changed my mind since then.

Can you back this up, macgeek2004?
Be realistic... Apple would not update the iBooks as frequently as PowerBooks.

It will be ready just in time for Tiger as well as the academic buyers looking at iBooks to purchase for school. Revisit this in early April at the earliest.

For now, a price drop on the iBooks. The SuperDrive 14" nudges up there in price with the 12' PowerBook w/ Combo Drive.

I hear it'll be Tuesday, too.

Just great timing. I just got a brand-new replacement iBook from Apple since my older one's logic board died for the last time.

Aw, heck, what am I worried about? The new one rocks!

They can't upgrade the current iBook until the Powerbook gets revised again.
Think about it, if Apple is going upgrade the 12" iBook, they'll make it worthwhile.

The 12" Powerbook runs at 1.5ghz, thus Apple can't bump the iBook's processor up. The 12" PB has a FX5200, the current iBook has a R9200. The next step up from an R9200 is the FX5200 in Apple's product line.

The only thing we might see is increased hd space, RAM, Wireless/BT.

Other than that I think we'll be waiting awhile.

i think the ibook will get an update in april- may, in line with the fairly regular 6 month updates it has had lately. I feel this way because it is not held back by supply issues for new hardware(the current chip 7447a can simply be clocked higher). I also don't see any reason the ibook shouldn't get the scrolling trackpad and hard drive protection that were just added to the PB's, these aren't really power user features and they are just as relevant to students. that being said it is my guess that the books will otherwise be the same, and the following update, around sept.-oct. it will be nessesary to update the videocard so that it can fully take advantage of core image/video for the back to school crowd.
I hope it gets a form update and i'd love to see the freescale 4778 chip in it by then.

While I don't disagree with the rest of your message I think you are setting your sights just a bit low here. What the iBook really needs is a e600 system on chip implementation that puts the iBook back in the running as the machine to use battery powered.

In other words we need a Centrino killer. In fact just a built in memory controller porbably would do wonders. On the other hand it is pretty clear that Freescale will be able to put most of a portable on a chip very soon. So why not set our sites high and aim for a machine with leading edge battery life and very good perfomance?

the 4778 is going to be the first implementation of the e600 core and is being touted as the least power consuming of freescales upcoming powerpc chips(less than 10 watts @1.4ghz), so i think we are thinking along the same lines here.
http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/...=DRPPCDUALCORE
i would be setting my sites higher, but i was allready expecting the 4778 in the PB's for the update they just had, so obviously there are some delays with producing quantities of these chips right now.
to get really leading edge battery life apple needs to get some of the battery technology that panasonic is using that is letting them put a 7 amphour battery in a 3.4 pound laptop (toughbook y2).

And by 4778 you must mean 7448. I thought I should correct you since you made the same mistake twice.

Man, I would love it if they put the MPC8641D in their powerbooks, and then either the 8641 or the 7448 in the iBook. It would breathe so much new life into their notebook line. Imagine screaming along with a dual core 8641, operating at 1.5 ghz per core, with that 667 mhz bus. Oh I feel it.

I wonder what they're cooking up for the next PB/ibook revision, I can't wait, as I'm buying the next PB over the summer...

EDIT: Yes, I am the kind of Nerd that envisions new processors and cars, and envisions himself driving them

Tuesday????? umm maybe you guys are starting to think to routinely. yes tuesday has been the day for apple products to come out. But im pretty sure that has changed in 2005. Maybe it's because the new powerbooks came out on monday. Or maybe it's because the new ipods came out on wednesday. Either way it looks to me like 2 things here are true. Tuesday is no langer "the day" and second your tuesday joke is over.
