I have a 12'' powerbook 1.33 GHz powerPC G4 768 MB, mac os x 10.3.9.....

lately my computer has been running pretty slow. i installed a program to monitor my CPU and ram usage. my ram rarely exceeds 400 MB of usage and seems not to be the problem but my CPU is commonly at 100%..... please advise as what to do to speed up or whatever has to be done. thank you

What program did you install?

You can monitor CPU and memory usage with the included Activity Monitor application (at /Applications/Utilities). Open Activity Monitor to find the name of the process that is using up so much of your CPU.

If you just installed Tiger, it's probably indexing your HD.

But then he wouldn't be running 10.3.9 any more, would he?

i have 15 gig availible, it doesnt seem to be single processes taking up the CPU space i think it might just be too slow altogether

I doubt that. I have the exact same PowerBook (12" 1.3 GHz G4) and everything is generally speedy. Of course, speed is objective, but I really doubt you'd be experiencing general slowness unless there's a culprit here.

Have you rebooted recently? Have you gone through our FAQ and performed the maintenance steps? (disk and permissions repairs, removing caches)

more importantly, what processes are using up more than 10% of the cpu? if you can list them here that would help.
