Recent upgrade to the home setup!
The MacBook Pro 15 is an early 2011 quad-core i7 Thunderbolt model, with a 250GB, 1st-generation Apple SSD and 8 GB of RAM. Usually it stays in my backpack and I only use it outside the house. The iMac 24 is a mid 2007 Core 2 Duo with an internal 115GB 3G OWC SSD, 6 GB of RAM, and 3 external FW800 drives with 5TB total (1 TB is used for my home folder, and the OS and apps only use 30 GB on the SSD). Wireless Apple Keyboard and wireless LogiTech trackball. The iMac and its external drives are set up on what is meant to be a laptop computer workstation cart. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg I reversed the work surfaces when assembling it so that the weight-bearing part over the long base support arm would be the lower and smaller work surface instead of the larger one as designed. Then I triple-velcroed the iMac base to the cart for extra stability, and velcroed a black power strip to the center post of the cart. The power strip plugs into an APC battery backup under the end table. When I want my living room to be less geeky, I just shut down the iMac, unplug the power strip, and roll the whole thing out of the living room and into the spare bedroom. |

You forgot the pic of your setup.
Here's my mess: I'm actually working it out with Mrs T now to replace my desk with something much smaller and that will show off the awesome case I have. Edit: attachments huh.... That's a very creative way to set that up. I like it. Louis L'Amour, “To make democracy work, we must be a nation of participants, not simply observers. Heh - yeah. Attachments is one of the benefits of mod-ship. Easier than using a hosting service, and you get automatic clickable thumbnails.
I used the iMac to type the text of the post (easier typing with the wireless keyboard in my lap). Then I edited the post with the MBP after downloading the pix to it from my iPhone to iPhoto, and exported and uploaded them. |

Thanks! I've gotten a few amused compliments on it from some of my less-geeky friends. I wasn't sure if the laptop cart would work, but it was a cheap enough experiment and it turned out even better than expected.
For the next enhancement, I want to fit a slotted board across the three base arms, and put the battery backup there. Then I can roll it all over the house without even shutting it down. |

What battery backup are you using, FFL? I'm considering one for my Mac mini, not because Paris ever has power cuts*, but because my apartment does from time to time when we overload our 1960s-era analogue electric meter.
* Really. I've lived here over three years and never had even a momentary power cut. These damned socialists know how to run a grid! |

I'm using a 750 for the computer for extended runtime, but you could probably get by with something smaller and cheaper. |

I'm sure you'll all be pleased to know that Publius took my advice (as he's been doing since he bought his first Mac, a blue PowerMac G3 tower, in 1995 or so) and ordered his new iMac with a 250 GB SSD and 1 TB internal SATA drive.
I'm betting it's a real speed demon. But if any of you can convince him to ditch the fugly Microsoft keyboard, I'd be grateful. On that one, he doesn't listen. |

I recently moved, here's my new setup:
No hardware change, the old MacPro is under the table. As I had to buy a new kitchen, the Mac update had to be postponed a bit (although after adding an SSD and a HD5770 graphics card, the old machine feels "good enough" for now...) A friend who's getting tired of hearing me obsess about what computer to get admonished me to just get a mac mini. His set-up is not unlike yours, with some big high end NEC monitor, I think it's a 30". He's a good graphic artist, does a little photography and a bunch of catalogue and retouching stuff to pay the bills. He had the first Mac Pro, whatever year that came out, and a beautiful quicksilver tower before that - still gathering dust in his house...
Most of the photographers in the college say, just get an iMac, and calibrate it, it's good enough. He's never liked the iMac, but he's a color nerd even though most of his work ends up CMYK, his impassioned advice was that most of instructors are idiots, or lying because they don't want to give up all their secrets, and I need to spend as much as possible on the screen. I have to admit, the Mini with an SSD seems pretty snappy. I wonder how it would go with two SSDs in RAID 0? Lack of USB3 is holding me back from getting any Apple desktop at the moment, but how much do you love that display? Would you live with a lesser one after having an Eizo? ......................................... |

My EIZO is a small and "cheap" version, Matsu, nothing like the top-of-the-range EIZOs or NECs. However, the image quality is really excellent. Uniformity is perfect, the gamut covers 95% of Adobe RGB, and most importantly, it has hardware calibration. This last feature is pretty much essential for wide-gamut displays, since our GPUs still output just 8 bits (you need to use the full 8 bits to avoid banding with a wide-gamut image, and that's only achievable by calibrating in the display rather than the GPU).
The other big deal with the EIZO is that you can build multiple calibration targets and ICC profiles and then switch between them on the fly in the bundled ColorNavigator software. This can be useful in unexpected ways. For example, since I can't practically control my room's brightness during the day, I cycle through a range of brightness targets (from about 30 cd/m2 to 100 cd/m2 for photo work; my room is pretty dim) as the ambient light varies. I first tried a NEC MultiSync P221W, but the uniformity was hopelessly bad so I sent it back. The build quality was also dubious on that one; the EIZO is much better, though frankly, still a far cry from the absolute solidity of a Cinema Display. If your table moves when you type this display will nod its head! Would I buy it again? I probably would, since I really like knowing my colour can be trusted no matter what I'm doing. But it's definitely a bit of a luxury for me. The rest of my setup isn't overly expensive (and I "only" paid about 700 euros for the EIZO; I know it's more expensive in the US, where I'd probably go for a NEC). |

Recently finished a major overhaul after getting my mom's setup moved into the other room and giving away my HP Photosmart AIO that wasn't working correctly when printing photos anymore. Now have a completely paperless main setup.
My mom's former printer cart which was formerly this room's TV cart is now my photography gear station, her previous computer is now set up on the small desk running Win7 for old game playing and such, and my main desk is significantly neater with the big malfunctioning printer gone. iBook is only out here temporarily to assist with moving files around between externals, it'll be going back to the bedroom soon. |

I had that exact mission style table from Target a few years ago! I used to have my iMac DV sitting on it.
Damn, with MobileMe now gone it's such a hassle to post pics now... |
