Please lose the red text, it hurts my eyes! And it's not going to make people respond any faster - the opposite is more likely, actually.

They could perhaps add that feature, but I wonder if there really is enough demand for it.

When DVD player first came out last decade, they didn't have built-in subtitles which annoyed me.

It wasn't until later versions (not sure which) before they finally incorporated CC.

So if history is indicative, it would mean they're not going to put in CC until there's enough demand for it. I'm guessing there's not even mroe than ten thousands people with a video iPod... a drop in bucket.

And since the CC is for the hearing impaired and the iPod is a music player....

But seeing how people are losing their hearing thanks to the iPod....

Believe it or not, there are deaf people who actually hear to music. They may not hear the lyrics but go along with the beat.

PS- Hearing impaired is a bit of silly way to describe deafness.

Tell that to PBS.

But anyway, the point was it's kinda like having braille on a TV. Yes, some people who are blind do watch TV, but it's not the first thing that goes through the mind of the makers of the tvs.

So I'm sure it's the same with the iPod, it just wasn't something they were thinking about. I'm sure in the near future the downloads will have a CC option in them, I'm pretty sure someone will force them to.

DVD player without CC is just cheap and irresponsible.

If you use Handbrake, you have the option to put closed captioning into the video. I have done it. You have to have excellent eyes to se it on the iPod screen, but it looks great on the TV feed.

By the way, if you use Handbrake, you can't turn off the captions. You either put them in and they are always on, or you don't put them in and they are never on.

Also, gotta remember, it's an iPod WITH video, not the other way around.

At least for now, ipods w/ video only have the video playback as an extra, it's main purpose is still music.

*bump*

Rather than start a new thread about this, I thought I'd post on this one.

Since this post was written they've come out with the iPod Touch which has acres of screen space and presumably would make it easier to read captions when watching movies.

I know QT has support for closed captions but few, if any, videos or TV shows apparently have captions available. I have also seen references to 3rd party software that seems to "extract" and display captions from videos that have captioning embedded in them so that-if I read it right- when you upload the video to an iPod Touch it will display the captions.

I'm just wondering if anyone here has tried any of these options and whether /how well they work?

I do a lot of travelling and it totally blows that airlines don't really incorporate captions into their in-seat entertainment features (at least not the airlines I fly). As a result I have to haul around a klunky personal DVD player which is fine but not really meant for the rigors of travel-mine broke within 3 months of use. An iPod Touch would be a wonderful compromise along with the ability to access e-mail via Safari and WiFi.

If anyone has any thoughts or observations that would be great. I'd love to ditch the DVD player at some point but not if the Touch doesn't allow for captions.

Just to be sure, did you ask airlines to turn on CC? I recall one flight in past, one had to make such request to get it...

Banana: What airline was it? Just so I can make a mental note of it next time I fly.

FWIW, I did ask about it and they did check into it but said there was nothing there. I had hoped-because there were several foreign language films available with subtitles only available in business class-that they might take pity and upgrade me-but to no avail.

The other flights tend to have the screens that drop down from the overhead bins and they're not very good.

I'm not too sure but it was either TWA or Northwest. I only recall that it had color red, so have to be either that. That was quite a while ago, though.

Also, it wasn't a dropdown from overhead- it was on a projector on a wall, I recall. Must be first class- I seem to recall being bumped, but wouldn't know for sure as I didn't handle the tickets.

Airlines aren't always consistent about such thing, unfortunately. The surefire thing you can do is whenever you buy a ticket, send them an accommodation request letter. This became a legal obligation once you do this and this is really the best way to make any sort of equal accessibility effective. If more people did this, then companies would realize that it is worth their while to be more consistent in this regards.
