ignorant: lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated or unsophisticated; can also mean discourteous, rude, or easily angered.
Yeah, go right ahead. Call someone ignorant and see what happens. Know why they get mad? Because they don't know what the word means! Then again, most people who use the word don't know what it means, either. - AppleNova is the best Mac-users forum on the internet. We are smart, educated, capable, and helpful. punctuation: the marks, such as period, comma, and parentheses, used in writing to separate sentences and their elements and to clarify meaning.
Good editorial has them, the interwebs do not. - AppleNova is the best Mac-users forum on the internet. We are smart, educated, capable, and helpful. We are also loaded with smart-alecks! :) - Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. (Mat 5:9) |

er... the interweb has a lot of them, just not following any standard rules:
:) ;) ??? .... :,( etc. actually I have a hypothesis: emoticons steal punctuation from normal text. The correlation of excessive emoticon use and lack of grammatically proper sentence structure is evidence for this. Last edited by billybobsky : 2011-03-28 at 13:35. |

Then you're on the wrong interwebs.
Stop being such a downer. Most adults do know what "ignorant" means, and everybody complains about opinions-masquerading-as-news, except when they agree with the opinions. Now the bias/biased thing, shit yeah that's a travesty. and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong |

discussion: the action or process of talking about something, typically in order to reach a decision or to exchange ideas
Or, in our case, to argue and call each other names. - AppleNova is the best Mac-users forum on the internet. We are smart, educated, capable, and helpful. We are also loaded with smart-alecks! :) - Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. (Mat 5:9) |

Precocious: 1: exceptionally early in development or occurrence
2: exhibiting mature qualities at an unusually early age I had a discussion with a friend of mine about a patient who I described as precocious. It was a disheveled conversation until I realized that his interpretation of precocious was negative. He thought that word implied that the patient was intellectually capable but socially immature. We looked it up and it appears I am correct. I have always used 'precocious' as a compliment and assume others do as well... |

compatible: able to exist or occur together without conflict; able to have a harmonious relationship: well-suited
I hate the way this word is used within the computer industry. Not only is there a misunderstanding of what it means to be "compatible", but there is also an oversimplification when it comes to 3rd party "accessories", and this holds to both Windows and Macs. In other words, sometimes compatible means "it just works" and sometimes it means "maybe, maybe not. Depends. Could happen, but could also drive you to insanity!" - AppleNova is the best Mac-users forum on the internet. We are smart, educated, capable, and helpful. I believe in the tech industry "compatible" means "not actually physically impossible to get to work together, assuming you're willing to take whatever means are necessary."

and: used to connect words of the same part of speech, clauses, or sentences that are to be taken jointly
or: used to link alternatives Sometime we write "and/or" but wouldn't that be logically same thing as saying "or"? It seems that if we meant XOR, we'd have made it explicit instead of explicitly making the assertion that it can be either one of, any combination of, or all of the choices as we do with "and/or". Am I misguided in wondering if it's perhaps incorrect usage? |

I think "and/or" is perfectly acceptable. "Or" would imply that if you chose one option then you couldn't also choose the other - logic nerds would call that XOR, but in casual conversation then that usage isn't widespread.

'xor' is very jargonistic. It doesn't exist in the common vernacular, and isn't widely understood.

Perhaps so, but consider the following phrases:
"Choose either one or other" <== XOR (the "either" makes it exclusive) "Choose one of the following..." <== XOR "Choose one or other" <== ambiguous; doesn't seem that it should imply it's XOR (at least IMHO). "Choose any of those" <== implies OR It seems to me that we already make XOR explicit as is the case with first two phrases but assume XOR in the penultimate phrase. Oh, well. Just wondering. |

obloquy: strong public criticism or verbal abuse
upmarket version of above see also soliloquy: |səˈliləkwē| noun ( pl. -quies) an act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers ORIGIN Middle English : from late Latin soliloquium, from Latin solus ‘alone’ + loqui ‘speak.’ All those who believe in telekinesis, raise my hand. |

Well, if the shoe fits!
- snow: atmospheric water vapor frozen into ice crystals and falling in light white flakes or lying on the ground as a white layer; currently falling in Boise, Idaho, and which may lead to frown: furrow one's brow in an expression of disapproval, displeasure, or concentration; also I hate the way people use the word snow as if it should be a source of delight. Clearly, this nasty, white crap is falling with no other purpose other than to frustrate my Motorcycling ambitions. - AppleNova is the best Mac-users forum on the internet.
