If you're in publishing, sure. But for grad student papers? Not likely. Heck, my wife helped proofread and edit an academic journal, and did it all in OOo before sending the files back to be opened in Word. MS-Office ITSELF doesn't translate files well. Ask anyone who's had to go back and forth between Word98 and Word2k, or Word2k and Word2003. If it's really a huge deal, you can spend an extra $50 and run MS-Office in CrossOver.
Regardless, the availability of apps isn't related to the consumer-readiness of the OS, unless you also think Apple isn't consumer-ready for the same reasons. I note that you didn't respond to that part of my post.
