It was long rumored that Apple was about to change the Software Update mechanism. Now, Thawte, a "Global Verification Authority" has started offering Apple Developer Certificates:

Right now, Apple's Software Update utility updates only Apple software, but it's long been rumored Apple might open up the software to other publishers.

Some have speculated that such a system might allow Apple to do for software what the company's done for music: transform a humble utility into a one-stop shop for software, updates and patches.

What do you think of this? Will we see this introduced, or at least previewed at WWDC? Will it be good to sell software through such a mechanism?
Will this go the same way as with Certificates you see on Windows?

Surly it would be up to apple to distribute these certificates once a software company has some how "proven" that they are making their software to all of apples guidelines.

If I am not mistaken, with MS signed drivers, is the signing not done by MS Hardware Labs once it has been tested?

OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available!
