Okay, i'm freaking out a little. just a faew minutes ago, i'm looking at my screen and the exact area i'm loooking at is completely fuzzy/blurry. to read sentence on screen, i'm having to 'read ahead' and flash back to catch the blurry stuff.
I've rubbed my eyes, splashed them with water. it's in both eyes . i've covered one at a time and it persists. did my eye asplode from inside? been perfect all morning...literaly just came on about 4 minutes ago, out of the blue. any idea what's going on, and do i officailly need to be concerned? |

By 'reading ahead', do you mean using your peripheral vision? That is, the "center" of your vision is blurry, but the edges of it are clear?

there are a few eye problems that will do that.
Go see an eye doctor today. And have a friend drive. |

Any flashing lights? 'Shadows' in your vision?
Could be retina trouble. If so, see a specialist today. |

Or it could just be gettin old. Junk floats around in the gel inside your eyes, the older you are the more natural junk there is. You might have just had your first taste of a good size chunk float down across the fovea. The onlly way to know if it's something innocous like that or a big problem is see the doc.

Seconded on seeing a doctor.
What you describe may be perfectly normal, but unfortunately, it's also symptoms of impeding eye disaster. Better see a doctor than be sorry. Oh, take an apple along, too. |

Have a friend bring you to an optometrist. It's probably easily solved with eyedrops, but it could be indicative of something worse.

thanks for the concern and advice.
it's been about 30 minutes later and all seems well again. It left as fast as it came on, about five or so minutes ago. My vision is like it's been all morning: perfect. If it happens again today or tomorrow, then I will go to an eye doctor right away. Very odd. I've never had that happen before...I literally could not see what I was looking at (words, etc.). Yeah, it was peripheral...I could look 2-3 words ahead in a sentence and somehow see the ones I couldn't while looking directly at it. Like my lens/focus was all out of whack. It was beginning to throw me off a bit, and make me a tad nauseous and wobbly. But now it's not. I've suffered no injury or knock to the head or anything weird to my eyes either. I will definitely keep an eye on this. Uh... Wasn't glomming for attention or sympathy...it just came on instantly, and I know there are lots of smart folks here, many with medical backgrounds. It was my first instinct... |

Second the seeing the doctor immediately recommendation. Someone I know had eye problems, and it turned out that he had a small tumor in his brain that was pressing against the optical nerve. He had to have a rather difficult surgical procedure done, but it turned out well and he's doing fine now. You only have one set of eyes, don't take chances with them.

I'd go anyway. There are some eye problems that if caught early on can be stopped in their tracks, but if left to their own devices will continue to get worse until your eyesight is shit.
Something that happens that quickly to appear and then disappear doesn't bode well (IMO) to normal aging or something physically in your eye. Sounds a lot more like a real eye problem. Google is your frenemy. Caveat Emptor - Latin for tough titty I tend to interpret things in the way that's most hilarious to me |

This is a little different from what the other folks have said, but it sounds a little like the "aura" you get from a migraine headache. Did you have a headache at all? With the migraines that I had, it was very common for me to get a blurry patch in my field of view that would persist in both eyes. I could cover either eye, and the blurriness would still be there in the other.
"Slow vehicle speeds with frequent stops would signal traffic congestion, for instance." uh... it could also signal that my Mom is at the wheel... |

Don't mess about, get it done today! |

For a few years in my early academe career I would get the aura of a headache without actually ever getting the headache. For me it looked like a silver and purple snowflake that started in the centre of my right eye and radiated outwards untill vision was completely obscured in that eye. This would last from 10 to 90 seconds and then dissappear.

From past threads, I'm pretty sure you're not on Zoloft, Paul.
Blurred vision is one of the many side-effects of Zoloft that they don't bother to mention. But yeah, I have to agree with everyone else. It's better just to go ahead and schedule an eye check-up for this week or next. Then you won't have this nagging worry in the back of your mind. Make sure you get your check-up from the right kind of vision professional though. My insurance/healthplan made me go to an optician optometrist (Dr. of Optometry) first, before I could be referred to an opthalmologist, when I had some concerns about my eyes. The optician turned out to be fine for my situation though. The check-up seemed extremely thorough and I was eventually able to remedy my eye problem with measures of my own. Why not google the term 'floaters', Paul, and read everything you can find on the subject. That is, after you have made your appt. Honestly, I don't think you need to be concerned. But the only way to be sure of that is to get checked out. ************************************************** *************** Edit: Changed 'optician' to 'optometrist'. ************************************************** *************** Hey, Paul, I just went and made an appt. to have my eyes checked. I couldn't get in till Aug. 15, and if I didn't take that appt., the next available was in October! So I'm glad you started this thread. Last edited by Windswept : 2006-07-19 at 17:51. |

I'm pretty sure that it was a pressure phosphene somehow associated with the iris, but I never determined what was causing the pressure.

I've lost track of how many recommendations are in this thread, so I'll just say that I "eleven" getting the checkup.
Speaking of floaters -- can they be alleviated? I know that I've got a few, but they're not a problem so far. |

Might want to add "eye" to the search term when looking up floaters. Or vision. Or anything.

Plus, my experience with a Chinese medical doctor (who practices acupuncture in the US) surprised the heck out of me and made me more of a believer in alternative remedies. In America, we health consumers are crushed under the heels of the FDA and the medical and pharmaceutical lobbies that massively influence govt. policy for their own financial well-being. This triumverate is almost criminal in its hampering of the consumer's ability to get straightforward, concise alternative health information. |

Just noticed that pscates hasn't replied lately.
I think we scared the heck out of him.... Windswept, my chemistry teacher would say that there are bad herbal companies as well; he told the class about how Senator Orrin Hatch helped his companies in Utah bypass the ban on weight loss formula (ephurhera? spelling?) by calling it "herbal" among other things. So alternative medicines aren't always the answers. |
