Hello, AppleNova forums members,

I've always distanced myself from the realm of Apple fandom, but a recent experience has changed my inner philosophy forever.

I had a failing iBook 900Mhz G3. The motherboard had died 4 times in 2 years, and on the fifth instance I called Apple Care to yell at somebody about my unpleasureble experience with their product. I stated the problem to a Apple Care representative, and he passed me on the a Service Specialist. I restated my problem, gearing up for a good old-fashioned argument about reliability, when he put me on hold. He came back and said, "Unfortunately, we can't replace you're iBook, we no longer have it in stock. But we can give you a laptop from inventory. You'll be recieveing a new MacBook..." He gave me the details on how to send my broken iBook in, and recieve my new MacBook 1.83 Ghz. Needless to say, I'm very excited about trying this new computer out. When I first saw the specs on the Apple website, I was jealous of all the students starting college this year who would probably get one. Now, I am among them. Hail the venerable Steve Jobs for his infinite compassion and wisdom!

Congrats. Looks like it worked out for you to have the issues after all.

That's just the thing, I didn't have to complain. All I did was state my problem.

Haha. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't warranty any of their products for more than 3 years after the initial purchase. And I don't blame them. But if they keep making products that fail every 6 months, they'll be getting a lot of calls like the one I made.

Yeah, in a way you're lucky you bought the flakiest, most failure-prone computer Apple made since the PowerBook 5300. Most Macs wouldn't have had that many problems, and you wouldn't have gotten them replaced for free like you did in this situation.

Apple did the same for me a few months ago

After I told my genius that the screen from my 1 GHz PowerBook 15" still suffered from uneven illumination after three repairs, they sent an e-mail to Apple on my behalf and I within a day they told me I was offered a replacement MBP!
Which I'm happily typing away on right now.

My iBook was replaced in December after it had to be sent in for repair three times and then still wasn't right. Got a brand new SuperDrive model to replace my Combo Drive model. haven't had any notable issues with it.

Yes indeed. My PowerBook just took a strange tumble off my roof. Very odd.

Me too, when my G3 iBook 800 crapped out for the last time in the spring of '05. I was far away from home, on tour, and I had everything backed up onto my iPod. I pulled my AirPort card and 512MB RAM out of the 'Book, put it in a box with a shipping label that Apple emailed to me, and as soon as it got picked by a FedEx driver, they hurried up on the BTO hard drive & RAM upgrades to a new 1.24 GHz G4 iBook.

From my first phone call to getting the new iBook at rehearsal took about four days. Not bad at all.

That night, my roommate saw that I had every one of my old files copied to the new iBook and that I was playing around with GarageBand and iPhoto's new features. He watched his bottom-run Dell lock up on Ghost Recon once again and said, "Dammit, I'm getting a Mac for my next computer!"

I'm glad buying a Mac has worked out so well for so many people. I'm also gald to hear that most of Apple's computers don't fail as often as my iBook. This confirms my earlier beliefs, as my dad has had a Quadra 605 for well on 10 years now, and still uses it for retrieving his old files.

Yeah, I am lucky I bought one of the crappiest Macs ever. The new dual cores are f-ing sweet! And soon I'll have one.
