I love FireFox but the past few days things got really weird.
FireFox was hogging up as much as 50% of my cpu at time. and would average around 20 to 30%. (i used terminal and the "top" command to get that). My G4 733mhz at home was starting to feel really sluggish and all i was doing was browsing. So i just ditched firefox and started using mozilla. now mozilla is currently using around 15 to 20% of my cpu (i still find this too much) but the sluggishness is gone. i can have a bunch of tabs open and its not a problem. has anyone had this issue with firefox? i was using 0.9.3. i find mozilla better in many ways (the remember password works better here) but i miss my search engines bar which i had in firefox.. oh and no bug me not with mozilla ![]() portable: MacBook 2.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD | personal: PowerMac G5 dual 2.3ghz, 6GB RAM, 6TB HD | work: MacBook Pro 2.5ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD | car: Alpine iDA-W407 with black iPod 80GB | pocket: iPhone 3GS with Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro's Last edited by usurp : 2004-08-23 at 02:36. |

Cripes, man. 20% idling?
![]() It sounds like other problems are abound. Either that or Mozilla/Firefox has really gone down the crapper since I last used it. Do you have any extensions installed? I'd give Firefox another try with a clean install, wiping out your old profile and app. The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. I'll guess that's on a page with flash. With Firefox I'm getting around 2.5-3% CPU on AN pages, with about 10-30% on a page with flash.

No Flash, No animation, just around 4 tabs. and 20% was mozilla, firefox averages higher and up to 50%.
now with 4 tabs open, gmail, bidpay, ebay and applenova.. mozilla is hitting 16% portable: MacBook 2.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD | personal: PowerMac G5 dual 2.3ghz, 6GB RAM, 6TB HD | work: MacBook Pro 2.5ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD | car: Alpine iDA-W407 with black iPod 80GB | pocket: iPhone 3GS with Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro's |

Yes Firefox on my PC has been doing that for a while. It will sit there and just eat cycles for no particular reason. Right now I'm testing Opera and it's not bad but surely not worth $40. I also have cookie issues with Firefox where I continually have to keep logging into to some sites.

I switched to Firefox at 0.91, but only because Mozilla crashed time to time (not frequently - it was pretty good). I tried some extensions and that took down the whole Firefox. I did a clean reinstall, destroyed Firefox stuff from my Library etc. Since then, no updating, no extensions, no crashes. My Firefox works like it should. I'll try extensions again at 1.0. I understand the problem was that extension protocol was finalized between 0.8 and 0.9 and I accidentally tried a 0.8 extension. (still shouldn't permanently screw up the browser though...)

I just tried that page in Safari on a 2 GHz G5, and it didn't even come close to bringing the network, Safari or the G5 to its knees. I tried it in FireFox too, same thing - no problem. So then I opened the page in both Safari and Firefox at the same time, and they're both open right now as I'm typing this. It slowed Safari down a little bit, but hardly at all. It didn't seem to affect Firefox at all. Both of them are still perfectly responsive. Just FYI.

I tried it with my rev.a 12" PB using Camino and it loaded in like 15 seconds.
