I guess it happens more easily over here in Europe than "over there", that travelling takes one outside the borders of the iPhone's "home country". So as not to incur horrendous charges for internet access abroad, is there any way to disable internet access on the iphone.
I don't have an iPhone as yet. I am considering getting one, but not before I know that taking my iphone abroad won't cost me an arm and a leg every time... P.S: I have run several searches in this forum, with several search terms, but could not find anything that would suggest an answer to my question |

I just came back from a weekend in Rome.
I took my iPhone with me in case I needed to make a call whilst I was away. For the vast majority of the trip I left the phone in "airplane mode" which basically means "don't do anything - mobile/networking wise" then when I wanted web access I connected to the wireless hotspots I was able to find. As a side note just about every wireless access point I found in Rome was unprotected! I didn't take the phone out of airport mode again til returning to the UK. If you have the iPhone out of airplane mode it WILL search for a local carrier and then you start to pay. If you intend to make calls and are going to take it out of airplane mode make sure the push mail is turned off first. Then you'll only start pulling data when you hit safari or internet type apps (like any other phone). Don't forget apps like "Weather" also pull data via the web. If you need to know what apps do what, stick your iPhone in airplane mode before you leave and see which apps want web access or time out when trying to load stuff. The weather app being a good example. Hope this helps. BB |

Settings-> General -> Network
Then turn data roaming off. That allows you to use the iPhone as a phone without the data functions. |

Or if you wanna be extra safe, you could just delete your APN settings while your abroad

Many thanks for the helpful comments - there are definitely geniuses/genii at work here in this forum. I feel a lot more reassured now about getting an iPhone - its just the we live only about 50km from a border and go to the neighbouring country quite regularly (and worse, sometimes drive right across two or three countries to get to Britain). While I don't mind (well, actually I do) paying the phone roaming charges, internet connection presumably tends to accumulate costs very much faster.
As I said, I haven'tgot an iPhone yet (but I guess I now soon will); dare I ask my next question: what is APN and how do will I get to it? Is that also under Settings-> General-> Network? And if I delete the settting, how do I get it back? |
