I recently got my hands on some ginormous versions of certain icons direct from the Apple mothership. Most of them include the alpha channel too for extra compositing fun!

The images I have here include:
  • The chrome Apple from the "About This Mac" dialog (380x468, TIFF RGB+A)
  • The Automator icon (512x512, TIFF RGB+A)
  • The orange Core Audio icon (524x500, TIFF RGB+A)
  • The blue Core Image icon (524x500, TIFF RGBA)
  • The green Core Video icon (524x500, TIFF RGB+A)
  • The Dashboard icon (1200x1200, TIFF RGB+A)
  • The Finder icon for Mac OS X 10.3 and up (450x450, layered Photoshop file)
  • The new iChat icon for Mac OS X 10.4 (1299x1096, TIFF RGB)
  • The Applications folder's toolbar icon in the Finder (835x826, JPEG RGB)
  • The big brushed "X" that is 10.3's "Panther" Logo (566x764, TIFF RGB+A)
  • The Mail icon (1200x1200, TIFF RGB+A)
  • The new QuickTime 7 icon (1200x1200, TIFF RGB)
  • The "RSS" icon for Safari 2.0 (1024x612, layered Photoshop file)
  • The Spotlight magnifying glass icon (1200x1200, TIFF RGB+A)
  • The "Powered by Spotlight" logo (1272x768, TIFF RGB+A)
  • The new orange .Mac Sync icon for Mac OS X 10.4 (1200x1200, TIFF RGB+A)
  • The Universal Access icon (1200x1200, TIFF RGB)
  • The G5 chip icon used on Apple's web site (667x500, TIFF RGB+A)
The only catch is that all of these together weigh 9 MB zipped and we can only upload up to 1 MB as attachments here on the forums. I'm not about to put them on my iDisk and risk tempting Apple's wrath; so, I'll put them up here on an as-requested basis if anyone is interested.

Consider it an early birthday present to the AppleNova community.

And, yes, I know these things are readily available to the press... but they're not readily available to the common folk like you and me!

You know, since the first time I saw the Core* icons, I thought of an updated QuickTime logo/clip. You remember the original demo clip that had the line in the Q of the logo sweep around like a clock hand? Well... On each sweep, have it show another Core* icon, and the final sweep be an updated QT icon.

Since you have the source material, I nominate you.

By the way, I'm suddenly getting way more Private Messages than I really want to deal with. If you want the images, post here and say which you want and eventually I'll start adding them to this thread as attachments.

The "Powered by Spotlight" logo
The new orange .Mac Sync icon for Mac OS X 10.4
The G5 chip icon

Brad,

PM me if you want me to host them somewhere... I have several sites which are dormant and they can sit there for ftp'ing if you like....

*smacks forehead* DUH, BRAD! DON'T BE STUPID.

I forgot that I was zipping up a bunch of bloated TIFF files and that it would be wise to convert to them to the venerable PNG format instead. This cut the size down by half!

Please at least post a quick reply here saying thanks or something if you download any of them. I'm just curious about who goes for this kind of stuff (raw download count never does justice). It'll also show me that you guys appreciate all the work I did for this and that maybe I should do more nice things like this in the future.

The Mail icon, even converted to PNG, was too large. So, you'll have to concatenate the two files together. Once unzipped, just do this in Terminal:

Code:
$ cat Mail.png.part1 > Mail.png $ cat Mail.png.part2 >> Mail.png
Without further ado...
Attached Files
File Type: zip Applications, Automator, Spotlight.zip (905.2 KB, 1189 views)
File Type: zip Apple Chrome, Panther X, Finder.zip (905.7 KB, 1136 views)
File Type: zip iChat, G5 Chip, Dashboard.zip (985.0 KB, 1014 views)
File Type: zip QuickTime 7, Cores.zip (878.5 KB, 974 views)
File Type: zip Mail.png.part1.zip (900.0 KB, 819 views)
File Type: zip Mail.png.part2.zip (396.3 KB, 776 views)
File Type: zip Pages, Keynote 2, iWork 05.zip (697.3 KB, 857 views)
File Type: zip RSS, Sync.zip (447.2 KB, 151 views)

Very cool. I love the new Core Icons. Sexy.

Also, I noticed that everything is lit 'directly from above' now as opposed to 'above and a little left'. Nice.

btw, Brad, your Mail .zip files expand to just docs...not folders. I tried opening them up in PhotoShop and they were both no-gos.

.....

Ah. nm.

Thanks.

So it goes.

Those silly designers at apple, don't they know if you start with a much smaller file, then no one can see your errors

thanks for the giant icons brad, I doubt I'll use them for anything, but still neat to see/have

cat drag file here, it'll put the file path > mail.png
cat drag second file here, it'll put the file path >> mail.png

I believe it'll put it in your home directory when you are done too unless you name it ~/desktop/mail.png right?

Just type in the Terminal exactly what Brad suggested while your pwd is the dir which contains the unzipped partial .png-files.
So you first type "cd " in the terminal and secondly drag the pwd from the finder to the terminal window.
Than you type brads code, each line followed by a return
The resulting file is in the same folder.

I've already put them to use: I made a 2560 wallpaper with them (I don't even own a 30")

What I have it all there is. Someone else may mask out the white if they want, but it's too much for me to work on right now.
