So... here's the issue. I had an iPhone since the Edge version and I got the 3G on release day. I've used the "restore from old backup" everytime I've needed to restore the software (for whatever reason). It's worked fine in transferring the old SMS and "Camera Roll" photos.

A few weeks ago, I decided I needed to to a restore and "set up as new phone." (This was to attempt to get rid of network problems which may or may not have resurfaced had I restored from a backup.) What had slipped my mind is that the SMS and "Camera Roll" photos would not get put back on the "new" phone.

Here is my question: Is there anyway to extract the SMS and "Camera Roll" photos from the backup and put them back onto the "new" iPhone in the correct places?

The backups of the text messages and image cache are stored in:

User/Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync/Backups

The .mdbackup files are individual chunks IIRC. You might try copying them into an existing backup of your phone and then restoring. There's an online solution which appears to help, but which may be suspect. I'd think twice before uploading text messages to someone else's server.
