Very nice! Are the seats going to be bolted from the top down or is there a board/block we can't see to hide the attachment?

Nice. I like that softened, rounded-over tabletop. That'll be friendly to hands, forearms and elbows (and the foreheads/faces of kids and toddlers).

The seats are gonna bolt from the top down with some 3 inch deck screws. I don’t have them attached because I need it to fit in the back of a truck. I’ll attach them when I get it to my dad.

Yeah, I used a can of paste wax for the radius and then cut them off with a jigsaw. I did the same thing with the seats.

Routers are great. I want to build a router table this year so I can start making some raised panels. I've played around with some freehand sign making, but I'll probably get a letter stencil set

Years ago (early/mid 90’s) I made a guitar body and used a hand router to put a 1/4” radius round over on it, to break that sharp 90-degree edge nobody wants to feel/deal with. Messed up (chipped out) in a couple of places (end grain), but, overall, not bad for my first attempt, completely unsupervised/untaught. I fixed the chips with some filler and hand sanded it to match. Wish I still had that thing.

It was my “what if a Telecaster and a Gretsch Jet had a baby?” quest.

Hey there! I stumbled upon this old thread and couldn't resist replying. Your coffee bar sounds like a cool project! It's always exciting to create something with your own hands. Mistakes happen, but they're part of the learning process, right? Ok, major snafu with my cabinet that involved me not paying attention while measuring. Silver lining is i now have a cabinet carcass for my workshop. Here's me getting serious with my next attempt at building this coffee bar.

I LOVE Sketchup. It’s intoxicating, having that much precision/power to create things in full. I take all my 2D tiny house design floorplans and “build” them in 3D to make sure everything works. I make a 10-foot king 2x12 and do stair risers and treads on it (cutting out the rise/run triangles, then putting on treads. I do the wall, door and window-framing (headers, Jack studs, etc.). I know all the words/processes, it’s just done on screen in hopes that when the day comes o build one of my ideas to live in, I’ve already worked out a lot of the measurements, angles, cuts, material/lumber count, etc.

Helping my dad design a simple backyard lean-to sitting area/shade structure after recent storms wrecked their Sam’s skimpy, 1” square tube metal one. I think he should do 6x6 in the four corners, sunk into concrete, a ridge and rafters, and try to re-use the canvas and mesh drapery from their old one on the sides. We’re currently talking out ideas. Once we get it formed up, I can draw up some actual plans, and a materials/cut list.

If I had it to do over again, I would’ve become a carpenter’s apprentice in my early 20’s and spent the past 30+ years building houses, gazebos, decks, cool treehouses, etc. Maybe that’s what I can do more of, now that I’m in the “back nine” and I’ve absolutely had it with design/layout work, sitting in front of a screen all day. My back, butt, shoulders, neck and eyes are all wrecked after decades of that. If I’m gonna hurt and ache I want it to be from real work/labor, not deskbound, “carpal tunnel” horseshit.

I made my whole house first floor in sketchup so i could play with rearranging things.
Making the face frame for this cabinet, for some reason, i was off by 1/64th in my dimensions and i couldnt figure out why. ended up scrapping it and redrawing the whole thing. I did it the same way i did it the first time and then it was all right.

It was crazy because the first 3 drawer spaces were 5” each with a 1.5” frame and the bottom drawer was 8.5”, for a total of 28”. If I measured the full opening of the frame, it was 28”, but somehow the bottom drawer kept reading as 8 31/64

Finished design! Needs to wrap around the chimney in the corner, thats why the smaller part of the cabinet. The two cabinet doors will have glass panels, im super excited to start this new design.

Cool! How will you use the skinny space on the right? What materials do you plan to use - will the top be Formica or actual stone? Wood? Will there be an interior divider to hide the drawers from the middle panel? Any built in lighting?

The skinny space is 5” deep and will have shelves for decorative and seasonal coffee mugs. It will be made with plywood and hardwood, the top will be butcher block, made from a pile of 2x4s that I have in my shop

Awesome. That shallow area is great for some shelving, or to do some pegboard on the back, kicked out a bit from the back wall, and hang stuff there.

Years ago, early 90’s (pre-Mac, for me, illustrator, Sketchup, etc.) I designed/built a simple little console to hold my recording equipment. At the time I was super musical/guitar-y, constantly writing, covers, experimenting (lots of 1970’s style twin guitar/harmony leads), and I had a TASCAM 4-track recorder, and 3-4 Bosscrack mount digital effects (EQ, reverb/delay, compressor, etc.). I worked in a guitar shop at the time and could get anything for dealer cost, so I lost my mind for a while there!

Anyway, getting the recorder out of its box, finding/connecting all the cables, etc. was a daily hassle and I started sketching something small and simple that would hold everything, ready for use, and be made from readily available stuff from home Delot (pegboard, 2x4, 1x12). It felt so neat to design something from scratch, totally sized/customized to my exact needs. My first time doing that.

I finalized the design for a day or two then went on Saturday morning and got all I needed, back home and had it all cut, shaped and stained by that evening. I was so proud of myself. It did exactly what I needed. Gave all that gear a permanent place to live, all hooked up, etc. so all o had to do was flip a rocker switch on my multi-strip thing and it all fired up. Just had to plug in my guitar and I was off. Used it for years and it was just right. First thing I ever really built and was so happy about it all. We moved to SoCal at the very tail end of 1993, and I’m trying to think if it made the move with us? Whether it did or not, it’s long gone now.

I just loved how my pencil sketches/measurements matched the real, finished thing. It was my pride and joy for 2-3 years and I gladly showed it off to any visiting guitar/musician buddies.
The pencil sketch is long gone as well, but I could quickly “rebuild” it in Sketchup, as I remember the basic, main dimensions and material used. I may do that and post it here. It’s nothing fancy or “fine woodworking), just simple straight cuts, a couple of jigsaw curves/arches, and simply screwed together. It held the multitrack recorder at a slight propped up angle, about waist-high, the side walls had 19” gap to hold the rack-mount gear in its brackets. I had a little piece of pegboard in the bottom with a few hooks to hold cables, etc.

Yeah, I think I will re-draw it in Sketchup for fun/practice.

My aforementioned recording gear holder. Very simple and nothing fancy/elaborate (it was my first ever wood/building project, in 1990 or so).



All the white is just Home Depot pine (1x12 sides/shelving, 2x4 "skids"/runners because the thing was a bit top-heavy).

The mint/green colored items are, from top down, the TASCAM multi-track recording unit, angled for easy access to faders, knobs/controls, three rack-mounted pieces of gear (reverb, EQ and whatever else), random pedals or music gear.

The back panel was pegboard, which had some little hooks which held coiled cables. Everything I needed to put down an idea or song was right there, in one area, 32" high, 21.5" wide and about 12" deep. No more fumbling around boxes/bags for cables, connectors, effects, etc. It was awesome, as much as I was into/using that stuff back then. Took no time at all to just grab my guitar (or bass) and record something.

Places like Guitar Center and online vendors (MusiciansFriend.com, Sweetwater.com, etc.) sell such things, but I had no idea about any of that back then, and I know I built it for far less than such "professional" solutions would sell for. If I ever get back into all that (music, recording, etc.) again, I know I could whip one of these out again in no time.

That’s what my Jasper needs. A big deluxe box. sandbox play areas are awesome, but in the wrong area it’s just porta-potties at Lollapalooza or Coachella. Don’t want my kid, with his Tonka dump trunk, shovel and pail, dealing with nothing but cat turds.

I challenged myself tonight. I took a 2x4 cutoff, resawed it by hand, then I took my miles falls #4 and flattened one side and then made one edge square. First time I did that 😁
