Hello all, I am planning to upgrade the RAM in my new MacBook; I currently have the base 512MB. I am wondering if it is possible to add a 1GB stick and have 1.5GB of ram without having an adverse affect on the speed of the ram or what not. I remember hearing something about having to match your sticks of ram? Anywho, thanks for any help!

I guess what I am asking is do the sticks of ram need to be matching? Will I suffer a performance hit if they are not matching?

No, as long as it is the same type. For example, you can't mix PC2700 RAM with the DDR2 PC2-5300 RAM that is in your MacBook Pro. However, if you wanted to use one 512 module of DDR2 PC2-5300 with one module of 1 gig DDR2 PC2-5300 RAM, you'll be just fine.

Actually, no. If the capacities are different, you will not be able to take advantage of Dual Channel. While the performance hit may be minor, it is still there.

I had a feeling that might be the case, is this a very big loss in performance?

*edit* I am guessing that I would not notice any performance difference from lack of dual channel because I currently only have one 512MB stick.

I don' think anyone has taken the time to actually benchmark the difference.

No, of course not. From 512 MB, it would be a step up either way.
