IIRC H.264 support only appeared in 10.4, along with the release of Quicktime 7. I take it you have Quicktime 7 since you can view them after downloading, but my guess is that it isn't interfaced into Safari properly somehow. Maybe re-installing/updating Quicktime would fix the problem?

This sounds like a problem I've been having lately. I can't remember if it started as far back as this thread was posted, but it may have. Basically, when I load a quicktime movie in Safari, it loads, but only displays the control bar, centered where the movie should be. If I play it, it will play the audio, but no video. Once it is fully loaded, I can reload the page, and then the movie will appear. At first it seemed to be doing it only with .mov files, now it does it with all movies that play using quicktime (except .wmv with filp4mac, those work fine)
