A domain that I really want is currently registered, but it expires on December 29 (not a moment too soon, since I want to launch the site on January 1!) I'm not sure whether or not it will be renewed or not - it was updated fairly recently (October 8), but it's one of those mock-portal linklist sites now.

What do you guys think about domain "backordering"? I know nothing is guaranteed, but if it would help me get this domain, I think it might be worth the extra ten bucks. I can always transfer it if it doesn't work...

An interesting sidenote is that the domain's registrar would probably be the one I would use to "backorder" the domain. Would this effect anything in anyway? Would they send the guy an email telling him that someone has backordered his domain, so he should renew it just to be a jackass?

I searched the forums, but found nothing. So...um...advice?

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

Did you do a whois search on the domain? Is it owned by a person or a domain company? If it's a company then I'd go with the "backorder" as it's prob just a ploy to make the domain cost a bit more. If it's owned by an actual person I'd send and email and ask. I asked a guy about his soon-to-expire domain with nothing on it and it worked out. My two cents.

90% of statistics can be made to say anything 50% of the time.

It's privately registered.

Bump? I'm still not sure if it's a good idea.

If its only an extra ten bucks, I would do it.

Definitely. If it's so important to you, surely it's worth a $10 gamble.

Sweet. I'm going for it...I just wanted to make sure it wasn't, like, a ripoff or something.

Thanks for the help, everyone.
