I just recently upgraded the RAM in an old G4 iMac (17" gooseneck, 1Ghz processor, OSX 10.5.6). I pulled out an old 256MB PC2100 stick and replaced it with a 1G PC2700 stick (Kingston).

It started up fine and ran well for about a day and then I got a flurry of KPs -- usually at startup.

My question is whether I used the wrong kind of RAM, I got bad RAM, or could it be something else?

I had this computer in may garage for a few years and when I opened it up I cleaned it out pretty well so I don't think it is heat (plus the fan isn't spinning too fast).

I should also note that after I installed the RAM, System Profiler said I had 1.25G of RAM even though I had a 512MB ram in the SO-DIMM slot. I assume that is just because there is a limit of 1.25 on this particular model?

Thanks for taking the time to read. Any help is appreciated!

Wrong RAM usually just won't work. Agree that it sounds like bad RAM. Remove it, see if the KP's go away.

Thanks for the replies.

Removed the RAM and replaced it with a different stick -- no luck

Removed RAM and replaced it with original Apple installed RAM and no luck -- still getting a kernel panic from time to time.

Downgraded to to Tiger and seems to have quelled the KPs somewhat but still get them (but way less frequently).

I also ran Disk Utility and Disk Warrior and not issues presented.

Any other things I should try?

Try running Apple hardware test, it should be on your machines original install disks.

Update:

Couldn't find the original install disks.

I replaced the HD for the heck of it. Didn't work.

Then I pulled out the factory installed SO-DIMM (for some lame reason the last thing I suspected) and ... no more KPs!

Thanks everyone!
