Here is a series of beautiful photos from Gary Kalpakoff, one of Best Friend Animal Sanctuary's in house photographers. These are all photos of what they're calling "the Vicktory dogs", the 22 pit bulls taken from Michael Vick's property and given to Best Friends for rehabilitation.

Groups like PETA wanted to destroy them, saying that fighting pit bulls are beyond saving, but luckily the court allowed BFAS to take these 22. They are absolutely thriving at Best Friends, and some of them have even been adopted out. Like they say at Best Friends, no dog is beyond saving.

Interesting. I put them online on some other places as well, and people seem to have totally different preferences on those spots. Sorta proves to me that a place like AN really has a unique culture. That's a fun thing to realise

I didn't take this but my GF did. She's in Belgium right now, and she took this with her iPhone using the Hipstamatic app. She's clearly a better photographer than I am, even when using a phone.

Yeah that is a nice shot. If used in the right light those newer cell phone cameras can capture great images.

I either shoot black and white in camera or use Aperture's black and white filters.

Normally, I use the Photoshop b&w layer mask. There you can fine tune the result by changing the lightness of the different colors.

what are those squiggly lines in the background? Great photo though. How'd you feel about the neighborhood / how do you feel about the planned one coming in? Sometimes those reconstruction projects are a blessing and other times they underestimate the sentimental value placed on it by the community.

The redevelopment is for the better. The neighbourhood as a whole has a mix of 1900 - 1930 and 1950 houses. They're only replacing the last category with something of the same scale using more or less the same street layout, in the same price range but with a (seemingly) better quality. Most of the earlier houses have already been renovated in the past 10 years. I'm pretty sure that most people living in the neighbourhood are happy with it as well.

Those are excellent environmental portraits, Chinney. I wish my parents had taken such sensitive and interesting photographs of my siblings and me when I was that age. Your daughters will find them fascinating in the future - and so will you, of course (if a hard drive crash doesn't eat the photos long before then!).

julesstoop: I especially like your shots of the steel mill. A couple of comments:

2. I think human scale would add a lot to this one.

4. Agree with pscates2.0 that this one's great. I think it works because you've found order in the seeming chaos.

9. Almost looks like a canon! The graffiti robs it of the dignity that 10 has…

10. This one's suddenly majestic in the series, because you can clearly see the horizon; but I don't think it's quite as strongly composed as some of the others.

Thanks for the comments Dorian. MY hard drive is backed up, of course! And having it on Flickr is a further sort of backup, I suppose. And I do print some of my photos too!

Just to complete the series of our 3 kids, here is the youngest, our son, now 8. The photo was taken this year, but on the same couch as the one with my daughter, above. It is a favourite spot for them for reading.

Here's another altered shot for my photography class. This one had us dodging, burning, and sharpening (selectively, with a mask) a b&w image. I was sick all week so chose my favorite picture I've taken this semester instead of going out to shoot another one I have the original a few pages back in this thread, but basically my goal was to make the dog stand out as much as possible. When I switched to black and white there were a lot of distracting highlights from breaks in shadow so I tried to minimize those with *burning while *dodging the dog and the path a little bit. Also only the dog has been sharpened to give it a little more definition. Thoughts on how I altered it?

Dodging* evan's question entirely, since I've been burned before on this forum for my dislike of dogs**, I'll add a photo I took a few minutes ago. A bit too private, perhaps, but this is the story of my life these days:



This fellow will join the rest in the bag of socks with no friends.

The photo is very dark on the histogram, but does it feel too dark? Reflective metal behaves strangely in photographs.
