Hi All!
Is anyone using the Dell 20" cinema monitor with their MAC? I read a comaprison recently between the Apple and Dell and the reviewer stated while he usually is anti Dell he was extremely impressed with the monitor and it was a draw which to buy. Currently you can get the Dell monitor for around $400 with coupon codes from Techbargains. Just curious if it's worth it. Thanks for your input. Jim |

By the way, MAC is an acronym for media access control. Mac is short for Macintosh. Just to clarify before Brad gets here.

If Dell is selling a good LCD monitor, buy it. Apple's offerings (outside of the 30") are overpriced.

Easily worth it anywhere around $400. Using one right now - if you're considering a 20" ACD, you can basically get a pair of the 20" Dell 2005fpw for the same price. Not quite a no-brainer... but pretty darn close.

I'm looking at buying two 20" monitors at the mo, but in the UK, the Apple one is cheaper than the Dell, educational pricing. Dumb, huh?

I bought one.
Nice features. Macs with ATI video cards can actually use the portrait mode since this monitor pivots. You can also plug in your DVD player & XBOX simultaneously since it has a wealth of ports and just select the one you want. But the value is unmistakeable. For a 20" Dell is hard to resist. With the adjustable vertical stand on the unit, it's actually possible to have your PB on your desk with the Dell in the background just above eye-level so you can have screen spanning very effectively with your e-mail program on the PBs main screen and your browser/word document/spreadsheet on the big screen above it. |

Dell monitors have rocked for me. They are so competitive price wise with everyone else that it makes a big difference in the end. Support has been great too.

Holy worthless post!
Yes, Dell makes some quality displays. My parents have a Dell 42" Plasma TV that they love. I'm actually quite impressed by it too. The best part is that it was dirt cheap. I really do like the Dells. As soon as I can save up a little I'm really gonna consider getting a Dell 20". Come waste your time with me |

Apple doesn't MAKE their cinema displays either. That's the thing about computers... they're not constructed the way cars are, in huge factories from sheet metal. They have a zillion different components, each of which is manufactured in a factory by a company you've probably never heard of. It's hard to say who actually makes anything.
When my dad worked as a computer salesman years ago, he said someone was just about ready to finalize their purchase of a Macintosh when they asked him if it was made in the U.S.A. He didn't really know what to tell them because I think at the time, Macs were assembled in the U.S.A., but I'm quite sure most of the parts were from outside the country. Actually, the manufacture of cars has changed since then to incorporate more electronic parts from various international companies (that was 1987), but it's still a lot more clear-cut than computers. You can get a Samsung 32" LCD now for around $1500. Why not just do that?

Maybe because it costs 3x as much? Also it's really meant to be a TV... it uses a low 1280x768 resolution, about the same as a 15" PowerBook. That's great for HDTV viewing (720p resolution) but it's significantly less screen area than even a 20" cinema display, not to mention the 23-24" ones available.

I finally received it yesterday after a three week back log with Dell. It is quite simply awesome. The picture is gorgeous. It also has two USB ports on the side that I have my keyboard and mouse plugged into with no probelm freeing up a port on my Mac. With coupons and codes through Techbargains.com, I got mine for $400. What a deal.
It is worth it. Jim |
