I've been reading about decision trees lately. I've also been reading up on and doing some baking. So, I thought, why not combine the two?
Any suggestions for additions or corrections? |

I'd put 'Chocolate' between Flour and Yeast.

I should also add that if you can make a tree that classifies the 5 "leaves" and is also shorter, that would be of interest.

I am not sure you can get shorter...
Let me clarify: the shortest decision tree is the one which makes most efficient use of each decision ie keeps the population of both answers roughly the same. There's probably a mathematical proof of this, but it should be intuitive. Using this approach, I turned a four week independent project (identifying an unknown bacterial species) in college into a two day affair; besting all other attempts at identification in the course professor's 20 year career. The original decision tree follows this pattern. Last edited by billybobsky : 2011-09-14 at 17:24. |

I guess since they're all made with flour, yeast should be the root of the tree.

Yeast: --- Yes--->Beer! --- No--->Pretzels And don't forget cookies. |

In order to classify pretzels and cookies, I may need to add butter and sugar to the tree. Oh, I need to add bagels, too. Those are very similar to pizza dough, but usually have some sugar.
EDIT: Pie crust! |

That don't make no sense.

I've made the yes/no questions implicit in the branches. For example, a tortilla is made with flour and warm water, not milk or yeast, and is not a cookie. A biscuit is made with flour and milk, not water or yeast, and is not a cookie.

Where is the sourdough decision branch? Most of my bread making over the last year has been with a sourdough starter that I began about a year ago. I love sourdough bread.
