What are the chances of any iPhone changes made prior to the June shipping date? I know it had to go through the FCC, so does that pretty much rule out the chances of say a user replaceable battery, or a memory card slot?

Yup. There could be changes like more flash memory, additional software, etc. But something as big as the changes you suggest would likely require FCC approval again, thus slowing down the release by several more months.

Not to mention that neither of those are particularly Apple-esque features to implement. The idea is to make it as thin, lightweight and simple as possible. Both your suggestions require to make the device significantly thicker and heavier, not to mention more awkward.

They've already said there'll be more software.
RAM is the only thing I could imagine might be a hardware ramp-up.
Accessories might be fun.... we'll see.

I would say theres a good chance we will see a capacity boost. After all, if the nano gets its normal boost in October, the iPhone is going to look less palatable by comparison. It would be especially strange if the iPhone, the device with the largest screen of the bunch, has a capacity smaller than all Apple's other offerings.

Question is, will it be 8 GB/16 GB, or will we go to 10 GB/20 GB?

I would say that there will be some software tweeks, and remember, the model at macworld was even finished, so I think they have some room to add more bells and whistles. Hardware wise, I hope that Kraetos is right, increased capasity and the like, but, other than that, no

Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

Where does the SIM card go? I thought apple didn't like to make things easy to open for the consumer.

That's what I thought, too. After all, it's $100 to go from a 4GB iPhone to an 8GB one, but $50 to go from a 4GB iPod to an 8GB one. It just doesn't add up.

But at the same time...the iPod nano actually has two memory chips, right? What if the iPhone only has room for one? That would also explain why the 8GB iPhone is (comparatively) so expensive - it would mark the first time an 8GB memory module was used by Apple (as the 8GB nano uses two 4GB modules).

I'm still not sure what I think.

But it would definitely be 8GB/16GB, if it's increased at all. For reasons I don't really know, flash memory always "doubles" itself. So no 10GB/20GB, unless the iPhone used a hard drive.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

I hope the iPhone gets a capacity boost. That would be sweet :-)

You're probably right. But 10/20 GB sounds and looks much better than 8/16 GB, don't ya think?

I really do think we'll see a capacity boost before this thing even hits the market, but you never know.

8, 16.

NAND flash gets very slow with chunks bigger than 4gb, so they use multiple 4gb chunks in series. 20 would be doable but 10 would not. Any bigger than 4gb response time and latency become large issues. I am sure Chucker can explain why better , I just know that it happens
