I just had to share this with someone. Today I bought a brand new boxed first generation SNES system for only $45!
The guy had like 8 of them boxed hidden in a closet in the shop. he also had original gameboys, sega gensis and 32x plus games. I need to go back and like buy all this stuff. Last time I got a brand new boxed NeoGeo AES system for KD80, thats like 200 something dollars. They sell for over 1000$ if new. http://unex-t.com/neogeo/ Now i just need to find Super Metroid... portable: MacBook 2.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD | personal: PowerMac G5 dual 2.3ghz, 6GB RAM, 6TB HD | work: MacBook Pro 2.5ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD | car: Alpine iDA-W407 with black iPod 80GB | pocket: iPhone 3GS with Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro's |

SNES fans? *raises hand*
I still get more entertainment out of some old SNES games than most modern games. I sold all my games a few years ago, though, and have downloaded a bunch of ROMs to replace them. I love emulators for this kind of stuff. I do own most of the games I download and play. I have one emulator for SNES that's called SNES 9x, available from here. I have a USB gamepad that my brother's bought a few years ago to play some game and now they've lost interest in that game so I can play Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter without having to use the keyboard.

Right, so I got SNES 9x. Seems like it works fine under OS X.
Now, where do I get these ROMs? I've bought plenty of Nintendo games over the years, so I don't feel like I'm swindling anybody. Besides, SNES is an old system, and Nintendo isn't making any money off of it. Links anybody? You ask me for a hamburger. |

Hmm... I suppose we can allow links to ROMs since the games are no longer manufactured and for all intents and purposes should be considered abandonware.
I use Edge Emulation for most. The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. The only way to guarantee thoughtful, informative discussion is to write thoughtful, informative posts. Right, so I downloaded the file "Super Mario Kart.7z". How do I unzip it? I guess OS X doesn't have native support for it...

Everyone be warned the link below probably isn't safe for work. For some reason people that provide ROMS also really like anime porn, so you may run into some of that on this link. Proceed at your own risk!
I really like ROMNation. Huge selection, fast downloads, annoying voting however. It says you have to vote for ROMNation before downloading a ROM, but you don't really have to. Come waste your time with me |

Also, the link in the forums from Drop7Zip leads to a site with a dead download link.

Heck, to avoid that 7ZIP stuff, just use these:
http://www.emuparadise.org/roms/ (ZIP files, read the page for the l/p) http://snesorama.us/ (ZIP files, see the "ROMS" link on the top left) The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. Back then we also had some good NES emulators too. Nowadays, though, the only decent NES emulator is RockNES by Richard Bannister, but the latest versions play choppy even on my 1.33 GHz PowerBook. Someone needs to smack him. Hard. Anyhow, I'm glad you're enjoying. BTW, I found that mirror for emulation.net: http://emulation.victoly.com/ The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. When I sold my first Sega to get a playstation way back in the day, I had to get an emulator to play General Chaos.
Still one of my favorite games of all time. WARNING: Do not let Dr. Mario touch your genitals. He is not a real doctor. |

Welp, emulation is tricky business. It's less about the quality of your machine and more the quality of the emulator. A shoddily coded emulator will run poorly even on a DP 2.7 g5 with max RAM. Likewise, a really really well coded emulator will run great on older hardware.

The new versions of RockNES are supposed to be "timing accurate" meaning they are supposed to provide perfect emulation of the whole NES hardware, not resorting to any coding shortcuts. Even for the measly 1.8 MHz (ONE POINT EIGHT MEGAHURTZ!!1!11) processor in the NES, it supposedly requires a god-awful amount of processing power.
Bannister doesn't seem to care about his users or actually playing these games. It seems instead he just wants to build a true-to-form hardware simulation application. If the guy had a knock of common sense, he'd make this timing-accurate emulation optional. But, NOOO. By forcing that and refusing to host older versions of RockNES (though, they can be found elsewhere), he's made it so even brand new $1000+ systems can barely emulate a cheap 22-year-old gaming console. Meanwhile, SNES games with stereo sound, transparencies and scaling and rotation, even that elusive FX chip which took ages to reverse-engineer, play smooth as silk on years-old hardware. That's my rant for the day. The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. The only way to guarantee thoughtful, informative discussion is to write thoughtful, informative posts.
